This thing is currently on sale - is it actually a good pad? I have a mouse for mouse control so it would be primarily for third person games which then get me thinking I should just get a cheaper pad with a right analog stick.
>>
Its the best controller unless you play a lot of fighting games. For fps, tps, and rts/strat games it is in the top.
>>
anything you'd use it for is done better with mouse and keyboard
>>
>>388847335
Is it good for gta 5? I want to get better at flying
>>
I bought one at a pawn shop.

Haven't found a use for it, though.
>>
I've had one for a few months, and it's pretty good if you want to play more traditionally PC-centric games on the couch. Wouldn't recommend if you still play at a desk where you have a KB+M, but for PC gaming on the couch it's better than the Bone or DS4.

The only major flaw I've found with the controller is that some games require you to start them through Big Picture mode to use the controller, but that's relatively minor.
>>
>>388847878
this, played runescape/browsed web from bed with it but other than that touchpads are pretty much a fucking meme
>>
>>388847878

Pretty much the closest thing to a mouse/keyboard if you like controllers. The only downside is for fighting games there are better things out there due to the dpad. But for third person games it is the best if that games requires aiming. Or anything that requires aiming and a good analogy stick for movement.
>>
>>388847592
Except playing pc games on my couch.
>>
The controller has a learning curve that many people aren't willing to overcome. If you're willing to go through the learning curve and customize the controller to make it work for you rather than having to work around the controller, it's a phenomenal piece of hardware. There are obviously some games it's better with than others, of course, but as an example even while sitting at my desk I love playing Civilization with it.
>>
It's a piece of shit, just go with a trusty 360 wired controller
>>
>>388848173
This is absolutely true. Be prepared to spend some time with each new game setting up the controller and getting used to it.
>>
It's really great for everything besides 2d platformers and fighting games. Twin Stick shooters are possible but get used to the controller first.

Mouse simulation+Gyro aiming is the best fucking aiming you can get on a controller. I'm playing through DOOM 2016 with it. I play a bit of TF2 with /v/ online with it, and occasionally Gigantic.
It's also great because it's so customizable you can make little conveniences for yourself in games, I'm playing Kingdom Hearts 1 and have the two buttons on the back of the controller bound to up and down on the dpad so I dont have to take my hands off anything to use the command menu. And in other games I bind jump to the camera trackpad because you can click it down and will avoid having to stick click by putting that button on the back buttons or face buttons, I'll move the sprint button or jump button onto the back of the controller so I don't have to take my hand off the camera to hit the face buttons
I'm also making a vanilla wow controller scheme right now for the sole purpose of seeing how elaborate I can get it. (I have things like sitting, taking my weapon out, and dancing bound to odd bindings on the controller, my whole moveset, typing, I have the camera usually touch bound with right click so it works like a controller camera and then mode shift to a normal mouse that can move around and click shit)
The controller is just stupidly customizable

It's my favorite controller. I use it for everything I can honestly.
>>
>AA batteries
lol
>>
>>388847335
It can be absolutely amazing but you need to put in some learning and possibly some work if you make your own presets. It being tied to Steam might also turn you off. It's also not very suitable for many 2D games you'd usually use a controller for.
>>
hdmi cable + steam controller is the comfiest combo ever
>>
>>388848435

Or just plug it in with any generic micro-USB cable. Hell, I've gotten nearly 100 hours with 2 batteries, which is more than I've gotten with just about any other wireless controller to date.
>>
>>388848435
I'd take AA batteries that last 80 hours over a built-in one that lasts maybe 10 any day.
>>
>>388848435
I bought a 16 pack when I got the controller in may and I'm still not halfway through the pack.
>>
Just get Xbox 360 or One controller
The only time this controller comes in handy is if you want to play shooters, which you shouldn't even consider doing on a controller in the first place, or you're playing some management game
>>
>>388848706
I got mine around the same time or even earlier and I am on my second set of batteries. How much gaming are you doing?
>>
>>388848846
60 or so hours a week and /v/ browsing
>>
>>388847335
It's a good controller for playing mouse + keyboard games in situations where using those would be inconvenient (couch etc.), but I wouldn't recommed it as an replacement for a standard controller in games that are designed around gamepads. For something like Dark Souls, fighting games, platformers etc. Xbone controller or DS4 are still superior.

Nah, the Steam Controller is far superior for this
Agree about the other genres though.

Most people I've talked to either love it or hate it. It might be a bit of a gamble.
Try one out first if you can, but that goes without saying.

- Xbox One - plug and play, will not work with older games, you'll have to install extra shit/drivers.
- DS4 - you'll need to install DS4Windows to use it. Personally I find it more comfortable because of the face buttons, bumpers and d-pad. With DS4Windows you can remap and change everything.
- Nintendo Pro Controller - Connect with bluetooth (you'll need dongle if your pc doesn't have bt) or adapter to use with cable (like Magic-NS). It feels like what the xbox one controller should've been, really good in the hands with great buttons and dpad. Get it if you don't want analog triggers.

- Steam controller - Absolute trash that uses proprietary dongle with radio waves. Feels cheap, ergonomics are 50/50 depending, if your hands are deformed, hard to get used to. Haptic feedback is bad and loud. Can't be used with anything that conflicts with big picture mode, like some games separate launchers, etc.

steam has native ds4 support. You can bind the buttons the same way you can with the steam controller

also, the controller bindings (ds4/steam c.) can be set outside of big picture now

>>388847658
Yes works great with it, it excels with 3rd person imo just 1st person is harder to master.

had one for a few months, some of the games i use it for:
>DOOM
>GTAV
>Rocket League
>KF2
>Warframe
>Dustforce
>Death Road to Canada
>Owlboy
>Stephen's Sausage Roll

if you're playing and FPS with PvE multiplayer then it's rock solid, it can handle a lot of different genres pretty well, with the added benefit of being able to access your computer organically from your couch. I still play FPS with KB+M but sometimes I just feel like plugging my PC into my TV and being a vegetable for an afternoon, and it's great for that.

Not perfect for everything, but great for a lot of things.

It had no excuse otherwise given that Valve poured everything they have into hardware.

Of all the controllers I own (this gen) I have to say the Switch Pro controller is the best.
All of them seem to have their own flaws.

=Steam Controller
+ track-pads add accuracy to shooting and can roll like a mouse wheel
+ Gyro controls aid in accuracy if the track pad is too difficult for you
- L1 and R1 are too bulky and hard to get to in a pinch
+ L2 and R2 have analog and physical click functions
- the physical joystick should have been D buttons like on the PS4 controller
- Left touch pad should have been a joy stick
+ touch pads can be used in a multitude of ways

=Xbone Controller
+ R2 and L2 feel really nice as a analog trigger
- R2 and L2 have no second function click
+ Joy sticks have nice grips (IMO)
- D-pad is bound together (should have been like PS4)
-proprietary headphone jack

=PS4 controller
+ D-Pad is great
+ Touch pad can make typing faster
- R2 and L2 have no second function click
- share and options buttons are too close to touch pad and are too depressed in the frame
+non-proprietary headphone jack

=Switch controller
+ or - Uses USB type C which the whole system uses
-No head phone jack to speak of
+ Gyro controls aid in accuracy if the track pad is too difficult for you
- R2 and L2 have no analog function
+ D-pad is more firm than Xbone D-pad
+ Feels really nice in my hand
+ Joystick heads have more flat space than PS4 and Xbone

=Vive Controller
+ Motion tracking (duh)
+ Analog and physical click in triggers
- Fewer buttons than conventional controller
+ touch pads can be used in a multitude of ways
+ Grip buttons add realism
- Grip buttons can be exhausting to hold for too long.
>>
>>388855853
Oh and I forgot
=Switch snap in controller
- Its fucking shit.

The no analog function KILLS the switch pro controller.

Opinion discarded.
>>
>>388847335
its good for couch surfing if you have a media center pc or have a long hdmi cable to your tv. Makes it easy to navigate the windows desktop and do basic stuff. For gaming it sucks.
>>
>>388856038
Didn't mean to quote the bottom one.

Removing trackpads is a retarded idea.
>>
If you can be bothered taking the time to set it up, sure. I'm using it for the original deus ex and it's working real good, especially using the gyro for fine tuning the aim.
>>
>>388856068
>The no analog function KILLS the switch pro controller.
>
>Opinion discarded.
I can't tell if you're in favor of it having a analog function or if you're defending the absence of it.
I don't think the lack of a analog function kills it, but I would have liked it to be there.

Also upon further inspection the snap-in controller may have analog function but the pull distance is so slight that I can't tell if it really is there, but it certainly doesn't have enough space to have the variation in pull that I'd like.
>>
>>388856038
The track pads are really bad a being a button function.
You only really need one for the mouse or shooting accuracy.
The left one is just a nuisance.
>>
>>388847335
It literary doesn't work without Steam running in the background
>>
>>388847335
ive owned one for about a year and it's absolutely garbage
anything that doesn't play well with M+KB, plays fine with my bone pad and vice versa. steam controller is a shitty hybrid that's good at neither, it doesn't even have a proper dpad for emulation
don't waste your money op, just get an xbone pad or a ds4 if you prefer
