Standard unless you want to 100% the game on your first playthrough.

I forgot how the mechanic works exactly, but basically every story boss you beat and most items you find increase the next boss's level by a certain amount, the former much more so than the later. I think Standard is balanced in such a way in which you can still stand a chance even if you don't find everything, but Advanced makes the story boost bigger, so you really have to find all the shit you can to stand a chance against bosses.

Can't really comment on difficulty but I recommend Standard over Alternate mode if you want bosses to be within range of challenge.

Alternate mode scales with story progression so i you're really good at finding upgrades and hidden items, some bosses will be either very easy or too hard.

Also the way to dodge them is that their hitboxes are inactive at a certain point. If I remember correctly the red ones have the hitbox be inactive at the start of the attack, while the blue ones have the hitbox be inactive at the end. So you just get to the correct side of her and jump at the right time to dodge it.

What difficulty were you on? Normal should be manageable even if you've never played a bullet hell before as long as you put some time into learning the bosses attacks and how to dodge them. Miriam was the hardest part for me but once I messed around with badges and fought her enough times I beat her in the end
