I like Matthew's videos, but I feel like he only really addresses his side of the argument at times. I think it's because his videos are all so long and he can't say every single thing there is to be said about a particular topic.

Every time he proposes an improvement to a particular mechanic in whatever game he's discussing I can't help but disagree. He has some great insight, but I wouldn't say he has good game design ideas.

He didn't refuse to watch the trailer just because it would spoil the game, that's a misrepresentation of his stated reason. He said he was guaranteed to buy it when it comes out regardless of what the trailer shows, and for that reason he can just refuse to watch it and keep the levels and mechanics more of a surprise. The fact that he is planning to buy it even if it's shit is an important point to leave out, since he has played all of the other 3D Mario games and made videos about them.

It's not like he's flipping out on people from trying to "spoil" him, he's just declining to watch the trailer. It's also not like he shut down his ability to use the internet for Persona, he just stopped looking at his Twitter. He's not going out of his way for either of these things, they're easy and straightforward to do.

I'm not blinded by nostalgia here, and while OoT was 'pretty good', it's the kind of game you're really grown out of once you've reached a certain age. It's just incredibly boring. Sen's Fortress and Anor Londo are pretty well designed and fun to traverse. Every other environment in the game is absolute trash and gets a pass because "look you can see this environment from this other environment". There's nothing fun about the seventeen forests in that game or any area that includes lava. But I think DaS is lackluster when compared to most any other game in the series.

DS2 felt like a number of 'stages' glued together. DS3 was a linear game whose level design tried too hard to feel souls-y, which made the level design really repetitive and predictable most of the time, since you've seen it all before.

DaS's world is the epitome of the brown and gray shit everyone complained about during the 360 era, except you can replace brown with puke green. 2-2 is absolutely fucking awful unless you take the chute straight to Flamelurker, in which case it's nothing. Going through countless samey tunnels isn't fun in any game, that's why everyone hates sewer levels. And DS1 was no more interesting or varied than DeS, it was just harder to notice how much of a rehash it was since there was only DeS before it.
