In a RTS game, when a group of units is commanded to move, they may:
a) Keep their relative positions whenever possible
b) Rearrange themselves, forming irregular "blobs"
c) Rearrange themselves, forming preset formations

What is the superior system and why?
>>
Being able to select the formation, like in Homeworld.
>>
C is best.
>>
>>388826623
correct answer
>>
C is how you get your whole army killed one at a time
>>
>>388826556
Being able to choose.

Also the example in c) is probably the worst formation you could ever make, even worse than a)
>>
>>388826752
Youre moving your units against cover
>>
>>388826752
Your assuming the enemy is to the right.
>>
>>388826556
The ability to choose but if I had to pick one I'd say rearranging themselves in formation with the melee units up front and the ranged units in the back.
>>
>>388826795
It's just an abstraction to sure regular alignment. The way formations work and the kind available or even your ability to customize them might vary depending on the game so a simple example works best, or so I though.
>>
The last RTS I have played is something like Warcraft 3 or Red Alert. What RTS has the very best single player campaign, keeping in mind that I'm pretty much at beginner level?
>>
>>388826924
>It's just an abstraction to *SHOW regular alignment
>>
It doesn't matter. You should either be moving so few units that the formation of 1-3 doesn't make a difference, or so many that you can't see the ground and they have to flow around geometry like rush hour traffic.

A if you are about to face units that have aoe/splash damage
B for bunched up melee units
C is bad for all posible options
>>
>>388826975
Starcraft 1 has a pretty fun story. But the missions are a bit dull.

Supreme Commander has some amazing missions, but its way too short.

Command and Conquer 3 has a pretty fun campaign.
>>
>>388826556
B is the best because of maximum supporting fire overlap. A and C are easy to pick off one at a time.

>letting the ai decide the formation
>micro is hard
this is why rts as a genre died and should be forgotten it ever existed
>>
>>388826975
get the sc2 warchest for 50 bucks. the campaigns play well, its really only the writing and acting by extension that are outright laughable.
>>
>>388826975
Homeworld has a pretty good campaign. But the remastered kind of screwed it up by putting the campaign of 1 in the engine of Homeworld 2.
>>
>>388827038
I'm not sure you understood.

C might have a preset formation that includes having the units split apart, for example, or have melee units get close together.

This is not about particular distances or whatnot, but how the game handles group moving in general. For example, Starcraft 1 does A while Starcraft 2 does B. AoE2 does C letting you choose between a few different formation types while Warcraft 3 does C without letting you choose.
>>
>>388826556
keep their positions unless you click on the rearrange buton
>>
>>388827202
The online coop mode of Starcraft 2 is amazing desu.
>>
>>388826556
You want A to avoid getting wiped by a trap, and take out units in hiding

You want B for a proper battle

And you are forced to take C when you have a narrow path.
>>
>>388827268
its certainly better than running comp stomps all day. the pricing for the extra commanders is full jew though.
>>
>>388826556
D) formations can be changed on the fly based on choices the devs program in
especially important in 3d rts
>>
>not being able to create preset alignments
>>
>>388827349
Never implied you couldn't. Very common in games like TW. If you re-read c) you'll see I didn't word it so that wasn't a possibility.

>>388827332
Could you elaborate, please? Not sure what you mean.

Everyone plays Starcraft 2 these days. So you might as well.
>>
>>388827556
command and conquer red alert 3 was fun for me as well. tim curry as the russian PM was priceless.
>>
>>388827785
Red Alert 3 was fun, but the story lines between the factions weren't coherent at all.
>>
Option A with a formation key that does not interrupt movement. Formations should be customizable.
>>
>>388826975
warcraft3+addon has the best story in a rts game
i also liked the sc2 missions, but the story was prettty bland
>>
>>388826556
Non-shitty RTS actually allow you to choose from all three using ctrl/shift/alt clicks. There's no "superior" system here, if the game only does one you have to micro like a motherfucker every time it's not what you wanted.
>>
>>388827038
C is for archers you fucking moron.
>>
>>388826556
A and c are optimal but b is the most realistic.
>>
>>388826556
d) individual units blindly beeline to the target location, and then randomly wander the map if they bump into anything, starcraft style
>>
>>388827064
Starcraft's vanilla campaign has lackluster missions, but Brood War has some really creative stuff going on.
>>
>>388828348

Which ones?

I forgot how well the convoy formation works in war.
One of Sun Tzu finest works.
>>
>>388830239
Not him, but you can do it to an extent with total war (assuming that each unit is one block of troops)
You can alt-leftclick drag troops around in their relative positions from each other, also by hard grouping units you can right click and keep them in relative positions
You can right click, which moves troops to an area where they just form a line (the better option than forming a blob since having a line is important in total war), right click drag lets you choose the size of this line
There are also preset formations (as in, stuff like triplex acies rather than shieldwall, which people get confused between sometimes) in some of the total war games although they're generally not that useful

b might be the easiest to just implement and for the player to adapt to it quickly
others might have complications concerning obstacles/terrain/etc
>>
this thread made me remember AoE II and its formation commands.
those were nice
>>
>>388827938
That's because it branches by about the 4th mission.

I don't get OP's pic very much. Is this "while they are moving" formation or "when they get there" formation?

Having a built in formation like in aoe 2

C is actually for speed.

Unless you go north. Then it's for attack and maximizing firepower.

Supreme commanders base game missions are boring as fuck, because the tech tree limitations. It's expansion, Forged Alliance, has a great campaign however, because you can go to tech 4 from the first mission

I remember how Rise of Nation lets me do different formations
and more options depending on the units in the selection
like the general being in the middle in the wedge and artillery positioning at the back
and the best part was Control groups get their own titles depending on the units in it, like 1st infantry for group of infantry, or cavalry for tanks/horses, and fleet for ships.
