Pic related, I still feel like this is one of the best FPS campaigns around.

monolith and raven pretty much created the genre as it was, every praises half life but they were who cemented it
monolith makes batman games now and raven is dead
>>
>>388821498
I think Raven is still around, but they don't have the money to try their hand at AAA FPS, so they just do contracts as third parties. MP maps, DLC missions, etc.
>>
>>388821630
raven is owned by activision, they are a lapdog

The Sum of All Fears is a very fun and largely overlooked operator-core shooter. People back in the day disparaged it for being a Rainbow Six clone with stripped down squad management but it's still a very challenging and tense game. It has complex level design, highly lethal enemies, tricky enemy placement, all stuff that will make you paranoid and really force you to move and shoot very precisely. The level design is also really just enjoyable. The levels' size and complexity keep the player on his toes at all times yet despite those qualities, the levels still manage to be very intuitive and easy to navigate. The friendly AI is abysmal though, but then again pretty much all tactical shooters other than SWAT 3 have shitty friendly AI.
>>
its because you were young, and only because you were young: wolfenstein as a whole is the very epitome of dry, bland, corridor shooting

its an arena shooter than just fucking refuses to be an arena shooter, and is whimpering and crying on mommy cawadoody's leg

each entry in the series is more tedious than the one before, the idtech 3 one, the 'time stop' one, the modern pretty ones with no actual new concepts

I thought it sucked compared to NOLF 1. The Japan levels were the only ones I enjoyed of NOLF 2, and only because of the gameplay design of the ninja enemies and the weapons you're given. The game's overall design of constantly respawning enemies, bulletsponge enemies, small levels padded out by making you repeatedly go in circles to accomplish objectives, is awful and tedious as hell. There's also far less variety in locales compared to NOLF 1, and the writing/humor is also worse.

I played through it recently and I don't usually call people out for rose-tinted glasses but this game is pretty crap. Shooting basically boils down to shooting the enemy as fast as possible before they shoot you, and hoping that their AI makes them miss more of their shots than they hit. Playing on hard was just one of the most frustrating vidya experiences I've had in a long while.

The gore in 2 was great, but 1 was a far superior game in terms of actually being fun.

I keep it around because playing the Firefight mode (equivalent to RS's Terrorist Hunt) is fun.

I found an old mod that greatly increases the randomization of enemy placement in Firefight, and also lets you pick the number of enemies that you'll be fighting.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/jlfobuba9wz2s09/Replayability-v12.zip

I like relaxing with the game by playing on the more foresty maps, setting the enemy count to a low number and casually walking around the map hunting for them.

Because it's a very good for a simple shooty-and-tooty with enough variety and lots of levels.

Playing on hard is just frustrating, I give you that. FPS on that era just isn't worth it to play on hard since all enemies use hitscan weapons.

Whoa dude, did Wolfenstein fuck your dog? Yeah it had classic id-style movement, but it practically gave birth to the FPS genre. It wasn't trying to be an arena shooter; arena shooters were trying to be it, but crammed in a tight space. Also, Call of Duty wasn't even a thing until after RtCW. The only sort of subpar one was the 2009 one, and you don't have to reinvent the wheel by adding new concepts to have a fun, good game.

tl;dr: eat dick
>>
>>388826657
Eh. CoD got better spectacles and the general "just a soldier in a huge battle" feel to it. But AA got a better shooting feeling. Shooting a thompson is just too good.
>>388826820

If there were ever a series that needed a remaster (NOT a remake), it's this one. They still hold up, but it would be awesome not only to see a new generation of gamers get into them, but to play the MP as well. Especially in 1.
>>
>>388826915
Do you mean that Wolf 3D invented the genre? From your posts it sounds like you're claiming RTCW did, which would be pretty weird. For post-2000s shooters I think the most copied template was Quake 2 - there are scores of shooters that feel like conversions of it.
>>
>>388826896
Boring levels? How? I thought they were very good, they had that weird atmosphere where they kind of are your traditional military FPS levels, but the way they're constructed sometimes makes them feel almost surreal. I remember an enormous oil refinery in Iraq, some kind of Japanese skyscraper, a slaughterhouse with a secret laboratory inside, train level...

>>388826916
>except the last part where you fight an invincible Power Ranger villain

Maybe you can help me. I love SWAT 3 so I installed the Last Resort version and everything was running great for quite some time. Then one day the game would decide to crash on booting. I uninstalled it so I could do a fresh install to see if that would alleviate the issue. But now there's some file hidden somewhere that makes my system think the game is still installed, it won't let me do a repair install either. Have you run into the same thing?
>>
>>388827847
Yeah, that guy has a ton of HP. I did it by hiding behind the protruding structure on the submarine (no idea what's it called in English) and peeking and shooting him with microwave gun and a machinegun when I run out of batteries. And lots of savescumming.

>>388829036
nah i havent had that problem with swat 3, it happened with noone lives forever 2 though and ive yet to fix it which is why its missing from that image
>>
>>388829036
Haven't experienced that with SWAT 3 (then again, I haven't tried uninstalling it), but that sounds like a registry issue. You may have to look for registry entries that the game left behind. However, instead of doing that, why don't you try getting a hold of a GOG installer for the game instead? I highly doubt you'll run into similar issues with that.

Pariah was a relatively fun shooter that came out in the wake of Halo and the like in the early 2000's.

Honestly it was not that good, but I liked the setting mostly, and it actually had a honest-to-god level editor on an xbox, as primitive as it was.

The greatest sin is that the story ends in a cliffhanger and a sequel never materialized.

/k/ actually doesn't know jack shit about guns and the majority of the people there don't actually shoot. All they know how to do is correct people when they accidentally call a magazine a clip, point out which hole the bullet comes out from and how a VZ58 isn't an "AK47"

It's quite funny seeing them trying to make themselves seem like elitists when they get clowned on once you see how poorly the shoot. Black was a good game, I don't care how unrealistic the game was.

Gathering of Developers put out some really impressive stuff back in the day.

It's a very interesting shooter where you need to depend on your AI teammates to carry your missions.
Like you need your Radioman to call HQ and report to get further objectives.
It has the atmosphere of bring in a harsh warzone.
And quite good voice acting.

But it's hasn't aged well in few places. Faces on the models look worse than Oblivion. There are a lot of chances of cheap death, on hard enemies one-shot you through the leaves.

It's a very unique 2000s shooter experience, if you can chew the shortcomings.

The actual developer was Illusion Softworks which was a Czech company like Bohemia Interactive.

They also made Mafia and Hidden&Dangerous 2 around the same time. Such great games...

Then it was ate by TakeTwo and they've been making trashy console garbage since then.

They fate was similar to Red Storm Entertainment which made Rogue Spear and Ghost Recon before Ubisoft bought them.

The last game Raven made was Singularity, which took a long time to come out and tons of money to make. It was legit fun as hell, but didn't sell well, so Activision tossed them into the COD MP map sweatshop and they've been stuck there ever since.

A few years back they teased a Singularity on Twitter, think it was 5 years since it came out or something. I remember getting hype as fuck with other anons, thinking maybe they finished a 5 year sentence in the COD shitcan and Activision would let them have another go at making a game. But nope, nothing came of it.

Shooting with some form of accuracy at a household appliance 10 yards away from you with rapid fire is not a difficult task. I like how /k/ thinks "magdumping" is synonymous to effectively shooting with speed and accuracy in mind. It's almost like they have the firearms proficiency of a disgruntled, urban gangbanging minority.

There is absolutely no excuse as to why there's ricochets forming 5 yards away from the line. I don't give a flying fuck if someone's using a pistol, that is 100% poor form.

Only one half way mention of Halo here wtf. Come on /v/ I know you guys hate consoles but you have to admit Halo revolutionized the FPS genre in 2001

- First mainstream game to use shields as a consistent gameplay characteristic

- 2 weapon limit loadout found in pretty much every FPS since

- Focus on vehicular combat

- First fps to really nail the console FPS control scheme (left trigger grenade, right trigger fire, sticks to walk/strafe, B to melee, Y to switch weapon, stick depress to crouch/zoom, etc..)

- Compelling campaign with a huge universe of lore surrounding it

- Multiplayer actually worth a damn (16 player lan parties that eventually lead to online multiplayer in H2)

Aside from maybe new DOOM, find another recent (last decade) sp FPS that isn't heavily scripted. You say that like its a bad thing. That introduced another layer of strategy into the gameplay. Players have to actually think about which weapons they want to bring into a firefight instead of having unlimited options

Game didn't have auto health regen til H2. Only had shields. How are shields a bad thing?

I have a love/hate thing with RtCW. Half of the campaign is really good, but when it's bad it sucks.

The first few missions are great until you hit the crypts and encounter the undead which are some of the most tedious enemies I've ever encountered in any FPS.

The forced stealth missions with psychic guard towers. The "I'M TAKING FIRE!" tank escort mission. People like to shit on Wolf09 for being a COD clone, but that campaign had none of this stuff.

Super-Soldiers and Lopers feel overpowered in a way that makes them a chore to fight - the game could have used more enemy types between the basic Nazi soldiers and the far too hefty Lopers and Super-Soldiers. The Super-Soldier boss is awful. And then you get back to fighting more undead.

It starts out really promising because you think you're going to get a classic FPS with lots of secrets and non-linear levels, but it never really delivers on its potential. Pretty good game but not the amazing classic everyone makes it out to be. Maybe the multiplayer was special.

Wolf09 does a much better job of being no-nonsense Nazi killing in the vein of Wolf3D. It's one major issue is regenerating health, but it does a lot to encourage you to get out of cover and take action thanks to the Veil powers. It's a very good game, really underrated and unfairly shit on.

Every level is a brown or grey corridor, there's something like 3 enemy types in the entire game, the slomo is pointless and stupid, and the horror parts of the game (a.k.a. the entire plot) are extra pointless and stupid. Guns are pretty good tho I'll grant you

I miss when /v/ shit on halo for being a garbage game.
We used to have threads like
>There are people on this board whose first game was halo
and laugh.
Now halo gets rabidly defended and hailed as some sort of pinnacle of gaming. Your game is shit and can be noted as the start of the decline of the fps genre into the casual garbage that it is today. Literally every point you made is only valid if you add "which is good for consoles" to the end, because everything had been done 100x better on pc already.
2 weapon limit is a crutch for consoles so that people could play the game. We already had 32 player online multiplayer with q3a, ut, and tribes.

Nigger there was plenty of enemy variety.
You had regular wermacht and their officers with a bunch of different weapons, SS troops, the Black Guard ladies with the silenced weapons, flamethrower and venom gun heavies, zombies, skeletons, lopers, and the super soldiers.
The lopers and super soldiers weren't that spongey if you weren't being an ammo jew and actually used all those panzerfausts, grenades, and venom gun ammo the game hands you.

CoD1 + United Offensive expansion
Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault

CoD1 is pre-console shit. No regenerating health, no QTE cutscenes, no bigger than life characters and totally crazy acrobatics.
You're always just one soldier amongst many, in mostly IRL-based missions and events of WW2, and the game even portrays 3 different theaters of war: through the eyes of yanks, brits, and soviets.

WaW is like a light-weight 50% remake of CoD1, 50% new stuff, but already heavily rooted into the post-CoD2 and 4 consolitis design. Its biggest differentiating thing is its high gore and gritty feel. And first Nazi Zombies

S for island. The first one has a village and a medium sized town with faction questgivers sprinkled around the island. The second island is the peak of thegame, with a big town, a lot of NPC interactions and a shitton of quests. The next big island is a literal battleground - vast open spaces, a few warring factions, combat vehicles, including a motherfucking tank.
