I really like the genre but I that I've never found a game that I would call perfect in it, I feel like I'm still waiting for the genre to mature into its full form, but it's dead.

Your pic reminds me of that DSiWare DQ SRPG, Dragon Quest Wars. Actually I wouldn't even call it an SRPG, just a turn-based strategy game, since there was literally no story or stats.

It looks like Onimusha tactics for GBA, very simple mechanics but still fun, good for playing on your cellphone to pass the time.

Last time I was in an SRPG thread, someone suggested Brigandine. I've only played some of the tutorial, but it seems cool.

I always though it weird in since the first I ever played were FFT and Tactics Ogre I would have though they would be TRPG, not that there's tactics in the games really.
