It was a gradual thing, but many people saw it coming. As soon as EA bought them, everyone panicked and made those pics of EA taking Bioware out back and shooting them. The game sold tons of pre-release reserved copies though, so fans were understandably upset that they had purchased something very different than what they expected. From there, the trend continued. Bioware increasingly focused on maximizing sales and taking shortcuts to faster releases than they did developing quality mechanics and lore, presumably at the behest of EA. Games like SWTOR and ME:A are the culmination of this steady decline.

Essentially they tried to incorporate a new "locomotion system" that attempted to emulate actually building up speed as the runner. In doing so, I believe, they spent more time on it than actual player physics. There were times I would be running with the ball and trip on a blade of grass. From what I understand despite not actually played the game:
The baddies are called the kett and are some scary alien race that are more like the Collectors than the Reapers. There are also ancient robots called the remnant but I'm pretty sure they are purely defensive and shoot at you when you try and steal their data.

The new not-shepard called Ryder who has a not-spectre role as "pathfinder" but they pale in comparison to the original series.

Game is on a different engine (Frostbite instead of UE3) but is essentially the same cover based shooting though you do now have more vertical mobility from a jetpack.
