Why didn't Starforce succeed where Battle Network did? Was

Franchise fatigue.

Also, it was successful enough to get 3 games and a spinoff so I wouldn't call it a failure.

Ultimately I love BN more, but Starforce had a nice aesthetic and some really cool ideas. I thought the characters were fun/had some potential too.

Mega Man was already dead thanks to MMBN4 effectively killing the franchise. It was the second best-selling Mega Man game ever, outselling even Mega Man X and Mega Man 3. The hype it got thanks to being a sequel to MMBN3, which was one of the best GBA games, was simply enormous.

And then people actually played it. And swore to never get hyped for a Mega Man game ever again.

In the end you can't pinpoint one thing that made SF a failure when compared to BN
With that said, the story and characters are better overall, Geo is a better protag, and SF3 is a great game.

No, it is that bad.
Dumb scenario, Dark Chips system sucks, Souls aren't as good as Styles and you gotta go through the game 3 fucking times to get everything.
Add that up with legitimate game breaking bugs that render it unplayable and you have MMBN4.
