Until 2m, it got popular because high profile streamers started streaming the game and because starved PC players play anything. After that, it got more popular because it was a popular game, if it makes sense to you. They knew how to capitalize on it by constantly forcing headlines every new million players, which made more people stream the game and download to try it out.
