Champions can be unlocked as a Reliquary reward so yes you can. $30 price tag is just to have all your current and six more future champions free. I don't know if they'll add more champions beyond the extra six they've planned since they are generally very slow to add new champions for balance issues.

They're just in the rune book and any progress you do towards any of them with that character happens all at once. So no, you don't need to equip a rune or anything.

I play Scalebearer right now because it's the only character that has unlocked for me in a chest, but holy fuck his survival is just beast and can be adapted to anything
150 health, fast as fuck F boost with 100 damage on trample and it's instant, that combined with the Gauntlet you mince a buffed fucker in a 1-2 punch, and by dominating the big health and armor and some hourglasses you don't even need weapons to kill someone unlike Ranger

Run to find the Lightning Gun because the LG is the weapon of LG Champions. If you don't have an LG you're not playing the game correctly and will die to people using the LG no matter how much health or armor you think you have. Other weapons are just a meantime for the LG spawn

Not even i mean you can't be a fan of any weapon in LG Champions because it's pointless against the LG. The LG is a hitscan high DPS weapon that acts like a sword and doesn't even need to be aimed to deal enormous amounts of damage, and with a Quad? HUUH
How can other weapons or meta even compete? they don't obviously, they just wish they could. In the meantime, LG Champs is balanced around the LG and it's the best. Seriously, there's way too many "WOAH FUTURISTIC" details on everything that just remind me of Call of Duty. I prefer smooth, clean, visually distinct designs.

Also, while it's good that they added new weapons to the formula, it's totally unacceptable that they didn't start with the 9 classic archetypes.
It should have been:

Q3A is visually busy as hell for a game from '99, they packed as much detail as they could into the textures because the models had to be lower-poly. You're just so used to seeing it with all the walls as flat colors and all the players as green Keels that you've forgotten.

LG is basically just single target damage. And some champions like Anarki or Nyx can doge LG really well. The rest of the weapons, are situational and all have their role. You must choose a weapon according to the situation.

For a start, it's not identical-- it has a higher ROF. And the reskin was a bad idea in the first place because with Plasma Gun you could actually make out the individual projectiles against the background really easily, config or no config.

Although I really liked UT more, QC is really cool. There are key differences in each that makes them interesting. The dodging in UT makes up for more frantic CQC awhile the weaponspawn control in QC is an interesting meta, whereas every weapon has a secondary and you can fend off well with either, whereas QC not.

The tribolt has very slight bounce but doesn't work the same as classic GL where you could just mash projectiles around corners and execute skillful plays that made the weapon useful and unique in its own right.
I've nothing against them adding the Tribolt and its stickybomb capabilities, in fact I totally welcome it if it will add depth to the game. But the fact that they didn't add the Grenade Launcher first and foremost as a basic weapon just screams wasted potential.

That's the leather vest he's wearing under the yellow plat armor, you goof. It's actually easier to see on the Q1 model than the Q3 remake. You do realize split/studded leather armor is a pretty common medieval/fantasy type thing, right?

If you mean those belt loops hanging from his waist, those were in the actual Q3A Ranger art by John Mueller which was re-used for the Quake Live background and trading card.

I thought they did a pretty good job updating Ranger, aside from the helmet. There's also the Gladiator skin which is even closer to the original model.

It will probably be a skin for the Death Knight. The Bone Daddy set for Anarki has lore on him being JUSTed by a demon and becoming an undead when he was about to die from drug abuse or some shit

Also, there's neck flesh connecting to the skull and the torso and legs don't appear to be skeletal. Bones need to be a full skellington instead of just a helmet

Death Knight is already a full skellington, which is an interesting design change given that both the normal and Death Knights in Quake 1 aren't undead at all. Hell, the DK still has fucking chin stubble in Q1.

Quake is supposed to revolve around one's ability to dominate the map and items through skill. The addition of something that allows a player to gain an edge (no matter how tiny) by selecting a different player model is sacrilege.

This is about right to me, though I'd swap Slash
with Nyx, and maybe put Doom Slayer above Ranger

Sorlag is so fucking busted though. High HP, Armor, and still pretty mobile. Not to mention his ability does 75 damage if you hit all blobs, does an extra ~40 in DoT if they're even around the acid, you can still fire your weapon while doing it, it doesn't affect your movement or damage you, and to top it all off the DoT lets you track through walls. What the fuck were they thinking? His only weakness is that he has a slightly larger than normal hitbox.

Clutch needs an HP boost and/or a mobility boost (let his ability build up in any direction, jumping breaks it or something). BJ seems like he'd be good for 1v1, but he has low HP and his ability has a short duration with a long cooldown. The rest seem like they're in a decent place, though I kind of want them to buff Galena's ability by making totems invincible if they're not active
