I hated Metallic Madness and Stardust Speedway. Sonic CD really is a weak point in the series.

Stardust is just a clusterfuck of springs and chutes, with no real level design to hold any of that shit together. It's just floating.

Compare and contrast things like Flying Battery, Lava Reef and Hydrocity. The lower areas have distinct feel to the higher areas. Level design done right!

Metalic Madness was just technoshit everywhere, without reason or rhyme. Like metropolis. Like Scrap Brain. Death Egg had at least some more open spacey-type areas.

In Lava Reef Act 2, you see a sort of rocket being constructed in the background. If you use debug mode in the Hidden Palace area, you can find all sorts of oddities, including a duplicate Emerald Shrine, the Doomsday mural (albeit with garbled tiles) but interestingly enough if you use debug to go above the Heavy Rider boss arena, there are tiles for the top part of a rocket (this time in the foreground, not the background like in Lava Reef Act 2).

Almost certainly something got cut here. Sonic and Tails were probably going to take a rocket to Little Planet, I don't know. Maybe it was even going to be a stage at some point.

The quickest special ring for postgame emerald collection, in my experience, is in Oil Ocean.

Below the first fire shield is a hidden drop shaft to the oil, with there being fans just up ahead to float you up to the ring. Takes just 20 seconds to reach.

Whenever you get lunched by a ramp, spring or bridge somewhere - drop down and go left.

I know in Flying Battery if you go to the bottom of the stage after trash they have this. Also in Chemical Plant Act 2 after I think you get richochetted of bouncy ground.

There is actually lots of level design that gets skipped and only is seen if you purposefully fuck up every spring jump and shit and fall into every pit.

Act 1 Oil Ocean, only a minute into the level is a fire shield ontop of a hole that leads to a ring.

Other places for Rings, in act 2 of Press Garden has two or so rings at the top of the level in spires. Easy for Knuckles and Tails. Likewise act 2 of Stardust towards the top is a section where you get sprung through a tube at the very top of the level and have one second to jump off it into a Ring. Otherwise door locks behind you, but you can go back under and around.

I don't know why they NEED a rocket, but it certainly seems odd that Sonic and Tails don't get a transition while Knuckles does, yet there's unused Rocket stuff in the Heavy Rider boss arena that you would never see in normal gameplay.

Then again, there's a lot of suspect stuff near the end of the game. Lava Reef and Hidden Palace hold most of this stuff, but there's also other oddities like Egg Reverie having unused slope tiles, the unusual amount of effort that went into the final boss heavies (as if they were supposed to be their own bosses), or of course the plethora of missing zone transitions.

Probably because there was never REALLY anything fundamentally wrong with the light switch mechanic from Sandopolis act 2. That's what people associate it with, but the actual problem is just that the layout is boring as sin and there's easily 6+ minutes of "push block to open timed door", "slide down this sandslide and do nothing" and "stand around on rising sand" sections for the less hardcore player. The ghosts are just a minor nuisance, the piss-soaked cherry on the shit-cake.

Although the other fight in the U shaped room with a blender in the middle I never liked. Also the rings never disappear which makes it way easy

I had the opposite problem with Oil Ocean's boss, the rings disappeared into the oil and so it was impossible to get them back.
I probably died more on that boss than the final.

The role reversal boss is cool on first attempt just because of the surprise factor, but in multiple playthroughs it suffers from the fact that it's hardly even a boss at all. The Sonic CD levels, even with great music, were a fucking drag primarily because side by side with the other stages, it just doesn't work...There's no rhyme or reason, just keep going and hope you're heading the right way...much like CD. I actually dug it. Sure it follows the CD style, which I'm not really fond of. But it worked. And in some fights, pretty well. Particularly the weather report boss and Hydrocity. I had the biggest smile on my face when the second part of that fight occurred. Devs were clever in the execution.

Flying Battery can be so different on different plays. First time as Sonic was basically just the regular, except went through trash and had an electro wire underhanging adventure, as Knux went upwards and played Wing Fortress all of the day, going in and out of the ship.

The Oil Ocean 2 boss killed me a couple times since I tried fighting it patiently and slowly, dodged all the shots the tentacle fired on the platform all skillfully and shit like that, but then I got fucked up by the aimed shots when the boss itself surfaces. Perfect run is completing Act 1 of Titanic Monarch without taking any damage. Losing a shield counts, but you can use your super form. The barrel one is in Act 2 of Mirage Saloon, one of the barrels you push to find a secret entrance to a special stage. The other one is in Act 2 of Oil Ocean, there's a secret submarine that you can only find by submerging under oil in one section. After finally playing it, I feel simultaneously really impressed and disappointed in the game. The remixed levels and some of the cool things they did with the bosses were amazing, and the new levels were fantastic for the most part, but some of the zone choices were bad. I'd honestly remove the CD levels since they don't really mesh well with the rest of the game even if the music and atmosphere is great. Maybe replace Stardust Speedway with Starlight or Spring Yard Zone, and Metallic Madness with Death Egg Zone and move it to the end. And as much as I love the nostalgic touches, the new levels like Studiopolis were so good I think I would have preferred them to just make a whole game of new zones instead of nostalgia pandering. At least its success means we might actually get some new decent Sanic in the future. Even a Mania 2 would be pretty good.

The only thing that threw me off initially causing a death or two was the platform being pulled into the ocean. Autopilot took over and I was watching the spinner guns surface so I didn't notice the tentacle wrapping the platform.

Other than that, I would have preferred they force you to take the spinner guns out first before being able to kill the main body as it was just easier to sit in the ocean and wait for the damn thing to surface and jump spam it.

Same with Titanic Monarch's boss. Maybe they should have forced you to kill each individual heavy before being able to kill robotnik.

People are theorizing that's how it actually was supposed to be in Act 2. You'd go through each of the mini-gauntlets, then fight a Heavy at the end.

I don't really give a shit about always online even though that's what everyone defaults to when complaining about Denuvo. The problem I have is how Sega of Europe went out of their way, behind the backs of the developers and the players, to add Denuvo in an attempt to prevent the game from being modded. I'm halfway through the game now - Metal Sonic was the last boss I beat. I died twice in Flying Battery by falling off the stage, and I died twice to the boss as I was figuring out what to do.
