It's not that random tbqh. Equipment quality is mostly normalized based on zones so you should always be able to steadily gear up as you progress and kill people. I'd also argue it's not anything like a normal shooter at all - H1Z1 and PUBG are a genre of their own.

it is very random when compared to other competitive games because by nature anything that is competitive should have virtually no randomness
competitive PUBG will basically never take off naturally in its current state

and yes this is exactly why PUBG is so popular but its hardly anything new at all
randomness is a very common design element in games because it helps manipulate the brain into playing more
just like a slot machine as long as the player knows things could be different next time that "one more pull" state of mind will develop
not to mention it also helps equalize the skill floor and ceiling so that even if you're bad you can win eventually if you just play enough
and PUBG is just like this
every game there is a new flight path, a new chance to get a gun before someone else and get an easy kill, a new building that could have good loot in it, etc...
and its especially helped by the quickness of defeat
its not like a moba where you might have to suffer through a lost match an extra 20 minutes
despite having permadeath dying in PUBG is very painless once it happens you either can just ignore the game and do something else as your team continues or you're already back in the lobby ready to queue a new match

Due to how overwatch's aiming pattern on controller works, mouse and keyboard is legit shit. Adapters like the xim4, what I have, works a lot better on games with 0 aim acceleration like battlfield and battlefront. Adding to this, Overwatch has banned keyboarders on console anyway. They're the only game to do it that I know of, and xbox and playstation even encourage it somewhat. I know PS4 sells the Hori Tac Pro on their website, as shitty as it is.

H1Z1 is more console friendly because there are no attachments. It is more arcadey and fast and fun. I would rather have H1Z1 on PS4 than PUBG on Xbox.

It's not a perfect comparison though. PUBG is a battle royale which means placing as high as you can. In other games it's just win or lose as your two conditions.

PUBG doesn't give you any info regarding skill level you just get dumped into a server with 100 people at an unusually high speed which strongly suggests that the game can't possibly be calculating the skill levels of all those people and actually attempting to make a fair match
Its clear to anyone with a brain that the matchmaking is very random like a lot of other things in the game
It simply prioritizes fast queues over fair matches because of course thats what appeals to the lowest common denominator
And I don't really think its far fetched to say that these other games have way better matchmaking systems when they're not early access, have been around for much longer, and are developed by more veteran studios
and matchmaking times in these games are actually slower despite having to match way less players and all of these games still have very high player bases
its not really hard to put two and two together here
