Let's be honest here, idTech5 was just another failure in a long line of issues. Carmack solely wanted to develop engines for games and nothing else, and sacked every employee that got in the way until it was impossible for id to make a decent game anymore. You can't blame him for Romero, but pretty much everyone else can be pinned on him.

That said, I think personally, if Romero never behaved the way he did, id would still be going strong, probably even a big name dev and the heroes we need with open source engines.

Real talk, I used to make fun of video game development (I got my masters in math, went on to study physics, then went back to learn IT), but after actually sitting down and hammering out code, I felt like there was more shit going in to that than any of the work I did in the industry. It's the same sort of structure (You're given a tiny part of a larger problem and optimize the part until you've hammered it out), but there's a hell of a lot more unknowns in programming than in math it seems. A lot of times you can't even really understand how complex the solution set is to something.
