Gamespy was bought out which meant that Nintendo and anyone else using their servers had their online services discontinued. Even games like Saints Row 2 were affected and they had nothing to do with Nintendo at that time.
Meanwhile Sony discontinued the Home service of their own volition without any applicable reason like abuse of services. It also rendered their related purchases as useless if I remember right.

Considering the casual audience abandoned the Wii long before the gamespy buyout and the remainder moved to the 3DS and Wii U it's far more likely that there are currently more players on the Wii U than the Wii.
It's also worth noting that Capcom killed MHTri's online before the buyout too meaning that community sailed early.
