This kind of disconnect always fascinated me, there are several games where my childhood memories turned out to be very different from the actual game but there are also games that I remember pretty accurately, I wonder if my memories just distorted with time or if I actually perceived the games as something bigger than they actually were.
I wonder if devs actually apply some kind of psychological tricks to make games "bigger than reality" like that.
