Not necessarily. I'm in the UK and carpet is generally seen as more comfortable and easier to manage than other types of flooring. Of course if you go with cheap carpeting it'll suck but that's true for anything.

Also yeah, my PS4 has plenty of air room. It used to stand on its side, but all that did was make the thing sound even more like a vacuum cleaner. It's SLIGHTLY quieter laying flat, but not by much.
