It's a fantasy game in a military setting based loosely in real world history. It has a lot of memorable moments and easter eggs. The characters are loveable and the visual design is very good.

MGS1 aged like Milk in everything but visuals
MGS2 is ok but some design choices were stupid and they didn't get the controls right until MGS3. Awkward game that tries to do much but at least succeeds in a couple of things.
MGS3 is really good but it suffers from direction and focus, stealth is an option now even in higher difficulties and there's too much menus and unless shit you'll never use. Good game with minor flaws.
MGS4 has amazing gameplay but suffers from a lot of movies and cutscenes that don't even make sense, also has shit bosses with good gimmicks at least, aside from the final boss and REX vs RAY, that is.
MGSV is just underwhelming and not good, they fucked up so much I don't even know where to begin.

So I agree, overrated series but I can at least see why people like them so much.

Forgot to mention that MGS1 is also good in the story department (for whatever that's worth), the villain is iconic there's good twists and most boss fights (assuming you aren't a nostlagiafag) are pretty decent.

I guess the stuff I heard online gave me too high expectations and not enough "real info" on the game so I got a tad dissappointed.

I basically expected The Rock (if you remember that movie) the game with a little bit closer to Deux Ex's gameplay.

I mean you have tons of cool tools but you very rarely have to use them, many times there are specialist areas, at least in MGS2 where you have a gimmick that will rarely return. Sure it makes the game varied up but it doesn't give that feeling of a mastery over a system...

Metal gear survive is actually a VR mission like MGS2 except its solid snake training to invade outer heaven and kill venom snake. Only you play as outer heaven soldiers to get killed by solid snake in the end. MGS6 confirmed.

Up to Metal Gear Solid the games were cool and sort of experimental with their gameplay and still fun. With MGS2 Kojima decided he was too good for games and started turning the series into some kind of 10 hour art house action film. The gameplay was still pretty solid but it started to be pushed out of the way in favor of all the mediocre movie stuff. Backlash from 2 game us the much better MGS3. MGS4 is the peak of Kojima being so fa rup his own ass and making an incomprehensible action movie reject plot into the focus for 95% of the so-called game. Backlash from 4 gave us peace walker and MGSV but now Kojima is back to making shitty art "games" with death stranding.
