Having to wait to swap Blades limits your arts options at any given time and the auto attack comboing slows things down too.
Basically, making the player wait is my biggest concern. The combat shown so far is pretty slow and mostly involves going through the motions to set up some super move that actually lets you do real damage instead of just letting the player be effective right out of the gate at the start of the fight.

Monolith is also important to Nintendo in order to develop open worlds. Afterall, Nintendo's Zelda team did receive help from Monolith on Breath of the Wild. Without Monolith, it'd be hard to say Breath of the Wild be that great as it is right now. Monolith has a lot of potencial, it just needs to be done right.

Played the shit out of both Chronicles and X, and loved them, but the combat system left a hollow, difficult-to-replay taste in my mouth. The combat is way too simple as a base, cluttered with way too many strange bells and whistles. It's like the worst parts of action rpgs and turn based put together. It holds the game back by both being unsatisfying, and making it confusing as shit for newcomers due to all the odd rules (even though theyre simple to understand)

I honestly would rather they just ditch the the crazy amalgamation, and just go full action RPG. Like, fuck, if I could be sitting on top of some arch hill in XCX, sniping pigs and shit, I'd still be playing that damn game daily.

The problem is using the "mmo combat" term as derogatory. You have a hotbar, your character autoattacks when not doing arts and you can't dodge something once it started casting. That is the principle of it. WoW can only wish to have combat like Xenoblade despite having the same basis.

Takahashi doesn't seem like the egotistical or lazy type to me. In an Iwata Asks interview they said he wrote a huge tome about the story of Xenoblade X, the backstory, the world, etc. Despite the fact that the game wouldn't be story focused and most of that stuff didn't make it into the game, he still put a shit ton of effort into it.
