There are bad designs in early gens and newer ones. The games saw a decrease in quality since like gen 5, and there have been worse designs overall, yet, there are still a lot of good ones

GTS only works when you deposit something decent and ask for something similarly decent.
Almost all the non-retarded trades get snatched up pretty quickly.

Oh, and you can disable a chunk of the people asking for legends, you can also disable people asking shit that isn't in your dex, though that gets less useful the longer you play.

GTS is still utter garbage. Just the option to check the stats of the deposited poke would make everything so much better.

What went wrong is that they took simple handheld rpgs designed for children and turned them into generic exposition heavy jrpgs.

1 was an awesome experience as a kid but its woefully broken

2 was also great as a kid and a lot less broken but looking back the game is extremely barebones and stripped down. Still good though.

3 would be great if it wasn't for the awful water region.

4 is the most bland, its would be the worst game if it wasn't for the special/physical split and Cynthia

5 is the best.

6 is the actual worst. Dressing up is fun though.

7 is great for trying to go in a different direction. My main gripe with 7 is that there isn't enough, which as far as problems go at least shows progress.
