Why is there no Groundhog Day-like video game? Some sort of game that would have you repeat a day(or any other period of time) over and over, learning the routine of NPCs and such, in order to figure out how to solve problems or whatever the plot is.

Similar to what you do in Majora's Mask, except it's not just simple fetch sidequests, and more about being the main point of the game instead. The Sexy Brutale, released this year, did something similar to that, but it had a very linear, simple puzzles and was very short overall.

>Similar to what you do in Majora's Mask, except it's not just simple fetch sidequests, and more about being the main point of the game instead

I mean, how is it not the main point of the game? The entire plot revolves around averting a disaster that occurs at the end of the looped period of time.

The time loop is ostensibly voluntary, but the goal is nevertheless to 'escape' the time loop by averting the disaster.

It's a double-edged sword. On one hand it can put pressure/obligation on you to finish, but on the other, it's known that making "progress" posts(or sometimes even just imagining progress) can trick your brain into a false sense of accomplishment.

Kagetsu Tohya, the sequel VN to Tsukihime, may in fact be the ultimate answer to this.

The character lives through the same day over and over, experiencing different events and scenarios, many of them bizarre or outright surreal. From just past the opening, you're bombarded with a ton of options and choices, without any particular direction for you to take. When you complete days, some options will seemingly just disappear at random, while new ones will pop up, with the triggers often confusing.

Really creates a unique, dream-like atmosphere.

And it's a shame. Fate/hollow Ataraxia does a similar thing, where it follows a repeating loop, but it's three days, and far more linear. I also find the plots to just be kinda less interesting.

Not exactly repeating the same thing over and over like Groundhog Day but Dead Rising takes multiple playthroughs to level up and learn optimal strategies. Super Time Force can be discarded as indie pixel shit but it has a mechanic where you roll back the clock seeing previous versions of yourself going through the level and saving yourself if you die.

>>388491116
I get what you're saying, and I've been thinking about a game like that for a while now. My idea is a sort of murder mystery with a And Then There Were None-style premise of having a colorful cast of characters stuck on an island getting picked off one-by-one. Umineko is similar but is a VN and also went off the rails with the metaverse bullshit.

The primary goal would be to find out who the killer(s) is/are but there might also be some kind of extinction event that happens at the end of the day. The true ending is to escape the island with everyone alive and the culprit defeated, but there's also a bunch of sub-optimal endings, some of which lead to big revelations. The way you progress through the game is by gathering information in your journal, all your other items are temporary but the journal always stays with you.

I have a lot of random ideas for this and the more I think about it the more complicated it gets and the more daunting it feels to make.

I had a dream like this once involving Slenderman turning back time to stop poisonous man eating plants from busting holes in reality. It turned out the reason he was so wobbly, teleporty, and faceless was because he was getting weaker from all the loops, had trouble manifesting himself fully, and only had 2, maybe 3, rewinds left in him before everything gets irreversibly fucked.

It was a strange dream.

Pick up WotS 3 or 4 on Steam, or emulate them. The games are based around the idea of repeating the same series of days over, and over; unlocking stuff with each subsequent playthrough, as well as taking different routes, getting different endings, finding different secrets, etc.

OK, the spoiler-free plot is such:

You have to get to the bottom of your own murder, and if you fail you time-loop and attempt to do things differently to prevent your death. In the process of figuring this mess out, you learn more about the circumstances surrounding you, other people, and your (hopefully averted) demise. It's got a pretty nice but small cast of characters, a couple of different endings, and pretty good voice acting. All in all, it deserves a playthrough on its own merits, doubly so for your case because it is literally the kind of game you're looking for.

If you're hankering for more of the same after this, check out Time Hollow on DS: it's from the same developers and has a similar vibe, although this time instead of Groundhog Day you're changing the past to affect the future in ways that don't end with you dead on the floor as you search for your parents who, as you come to find out after waking up one day, have suddenly gone missing for the past decade.

So yeah, at least check out Shadow of Destiny. The version doesn't matter, it plays fine on PS2, PSP, and PC. Time Hollow is only on DS, so buy or emulate.
