Am I just clouded by nostalgia or was the Dreamcast not a fucking amazing console full of fun niche titles that wouldn't see the light of day nowadays, adventurous experimental titles, and various exclusive imports?

Like I had everything from a TurboGrafX16 to a PS2 growing up, but the Dreamcast felt special, like it had more of a "soul" to it than other consoles.

Fine, apart from having to suffer using a shit controller. But if you want more content you should be playing Blue Burst on the PC which you can still play online. Dreamcast for senseless nostalgia or BB for the complete game. The GC version has no purpose anymore.

Some games would be indie but with much less quality.
Something ambitious as Shenmue would never happen. Much less with that amount of detail and hidden secrets.
Arcade games are dead so, arcade should would never happen.
So yeah, Dreamcast was special, because it was a mix of many things.

I guess if your mates are too poor or lazy to bring around their PCs for a LAN, otherwise setting up your own BB server, which is a 3 minute ordeal, or just playing on an existing internet one is still the way to go. Putting up with splitscreen seems like unneccesary suffering to me.

I don't know much about this game but here's a bump.

There are DC version 2 servers in existence, you can't use your original disc obviously but you can burn a disc that can connect to said servers and play PSO with the one other ultra nostalgiafag who hates PSOBB!

'Cause the official servers are dead as a doornail m8. You'd need to use a modified version of the game that connects to a living server. Remember, Dreamcast plays backups out of the box so this is not a big deal.

That's alright. I get goose bumps and have to stop and reminisce every time I think about PSO a little in-depth. It's kind of funny how now that you grow older and jaded, things mean so less more than they did back then - hell, I was hype for the few chances I got to sit down and play through every single area of Ep 1 or 2 on Xbox.

But it's okay because those things will live on forever. Ephinea is doing pretty strongly right now, and you aren't the only one to get goosebumps when you remember any cutscene, area, item drop, music, or long night spent chilling in the lobby with people that were nowhere in your local area, but that shared the same (ultimately) meaningless passion as you.

It's those good times and the promise of a return, no matter how brief, to simpler times and a connection through then. Sort of like a time portal, for any lack of a more eloquent or accurate phrase. I know I just played PSO last year and got a whole gang together to slough through the content, but just couldn't remain interested. Those things are still going to be there whenever I'm ready, bored, comfortable and in a position to go back and enjoy those things just as much as I did back then.

I bought one a couple of years ago and I can't tell you how happy I was to see a brand new, factory sealed Gamecube game after so long. I had played a ton of PSO on Dreamcast and Xbox but never the card game spin-off. It's pretty neat, although I only played the hero side.

If you're okay with taking the risk, check the underside of the console to see if it's a Model 0/1, if it is then you'll be able to play games fine. Otherwise, try and look up SD card readers for the Dreamcast.

I don't have one myself, but videos I find online show that people can run games off the thing perfectly fine. Including stuff like Shenmue 2's Emulator only English Patch. Apparently the speeds for the loading are around 20-30 seconds, which would be similar to starting up an actual Dreamcast with a game inside.
