Honestly, the whole "get a gaming desktop for cheap, forget consoles" meme is pretty shit. If you're doing absolutely nothing but playing (current) games, getting a console is probably best.

PC is great if you actually use it AS a PC and to play games at slightly higher framerates. This is speaking as a midrange PC around like the 700-900 dollar range, starting from scratch. You aren't going to be getting a 1070 and whatever new i5/7 for under a grand.

And at that point, you're getting into high end PCs so you really can't compare them to consoles anyway, performance OR price-wise.

If you don't add a monitor (use a TV temporarily) + m & KB to the price and pirate windows/use linux.

Perhaps not but I'm going to need a PC anyway and there's some genres that have almost nothing on consoles like strategy and MMO that I enjoy, so I'm always going to get a gaming PC rather than a box that misses out on some of the games I want to play just because it's cheaper.

Having a PC but not an Xbox One I miss out on maybe one or two games I want to play that won't come to PC (and I honestly can't think of any off the top of my head, almost everything for xbox one is available on PC as well)

If I have an Xbox One but not a PC I miss out on a lot more games that I wanted to play.

The truth is most people don't even play games enough to warrant dropping the coin on PCs. It's all a dick waving contest.

$300 - 500 on a console, especially when it doubles as media center for streaming and movies, is an ideal and easy choice.

$800 - 1200 for a mid-range PC to get a dozen or so extra frames, a higher resolution (that doesn't mean jack shit because you're comparing a monitor you're a foot away from to a TV you're 6 - 8 feet away from), all while not being to play any console exclusives just sounds like a bum deal unless you were needing a computer anyways.

You'll get a bunch of guys sitting at a desk talking through builds that they only speced out and didn't build or test. They take a ton of shortcuts, make assumptions, and use dubious mail in rebate offers.

It's a fun thought experiment that gets clicks, but there is really not much reason to actually follow through. Unless you absolutely need keyboard and mouse play, consoles are more cost effective at the lower end.

If you building a PC, go big or go home IMO.

I haven't been able to convince myself to build a desktop in years. Modding isn't even a thing anymore in 99% of PC games and everything is aimed at toasters. I just use a $1k Laptop and Switch for working out of hotels and all the latest consoles for home use.
