Anyway, I've given up on the game ever being made. At this point, I just want Valve to allow someone the rights to write a book, script, whatever so we know how the story ends.

We need to work together to pressure Valve into making this happen. Even fucking Lucas realized he was cancer the the SW franchise and it was time to let it go. Time for Valve to do the same and we need to MAKE them.

They likely had enough content for a 5-6 hour episode, but they wanted to make it revolutionary, so they were waiting on the technology.

During early development, the revolution in episode 3 was supposed to be deaf-friendlyness (I wish I was joking). Valve had a pair of controllers that allowed you to use sign language, and one of the major characters introduced in the episode was deaf. This was probably scrapped because a set of motion controllers for sign language is fucking stupid for the average consumer.

Later in development, 2008-2012-ish, Valve decided episode 3/HL3 was going to revolutionize the open world genre. The current draft of the game might still be open world based on Source 2 code, but that would mean they'd be porting the whole game over to a new engine.

Now, Valve is all-in on VR, so perfecting VR support on upcoming titles is their #1 priority. Whether HL3 will be a VR title or not is anyone's guess, though. If it's one of Valve's "3 Full VR games" in development, we might see an announcement by the end of the year.
