Why is it so hard to make space games anymore? I honestly feel that every single one made in the past 5-10 years has been irredeemable garbage. This was a great genre in the 90's and early 2000's.

The problem is most space games haven't evolved enough in the actual gameplay mechanics. They're still just ww2 fighters in space and that got old 20 years ago.

Good question, op. I was going to say some BS about how it's more expensive or hard to make, but it's space. It's 90% empty. Maybe the devs are just lazy.

Nah, Starsector is legit one of the best games I've ever played.
>>
>>388426235
The main problem with space games is that they lack any sort of level design aspect as they take place in a big void. At best you have a couple asteroids, but it doesn't make up for how bland every one of them is.
>>
>>388427186
Well, I agree with that, but there are some games based on space fighting such as Colony wars, they are good, why couldn't we get more of them?
>>
>>388427329
>why couldn't we get more of them?
We're still getting some space fighting games. Strike Suit Zero/Infinity and Everspace are recent.
None of them solve the issue I mentioned though, which I am absolutely certain is the main problem of those games.

check out Star Citizen OP, its literally gonna be THE video game, maybe the best ever

the team is avoiding publicity but its being made by a guy who literally even space games and made Wing Commander. Also ran the legendary Origin which was one of the most innovative games companies ever

I'm learning to program right now and I plan to start up a 5-10 man indie gamedev company sometime in the next few years.

One of the biggest ideas I have is a space game actually.

It's a third person perspective fully 3d grimdark spaceship survival game/simulator sandbox, with a high focus on production values like atmosphere, gameplay and sound/music.

I'm thinking the atmosphere will be something like Alien movies + Homeworld.

Your ship will have crew, the top officers of which will be fully fledged characters you can upgrade and maintain, the general crew only so much.

The mechanics shall be deep requiring innovative strategies and quick-thinking during engagements and strange anomalies.

The game shall autosave once every hour.

The whole point of the game will be to bond with your crew but most importantly your ship. A person who has survived for a long time will form a special relationship with their ship.
>>
>>388426235
>Why is it so hard to make space games anymore?

That's not what anymore means.

Dude. just boil it down to the simplest you can, make a prototype with default assets like cubes and shit.
If you now have a clear idea how you actually do the the stuff you wrote, then press on. If you dont, then build from the prototype up and hope you can get as close as possible to your plan.
IF you cant even get a working prototype up, just give up. There are countless codemonkeys who have the same dreams as you who can actually make it, and they sure as fuck wont be working on your idea, rather on their own.

Seriously. even if you will be only the project lead, you must have at least an idea how things work to have any realistic demands about the end product.

Wait until Starfield is released.
It will have an Outland feel.
With Freelancer style space combat and travel.
Star Trek style planetary exploration.

The game area will be "The Belt" a massive Saturn style ring with sizes ranging from a small pebble to planetoid and moon sized objects.

You will be a Terran Exploring Officer tasked with exploring the belt and the groups that populate it.

It will be genre defining.

You should try Alien: Isolation or Dead Space 1/2 then. They are also both done in the best video game genre (survival horror) so it's only a plus. If you want to go the other direction and experience deep sea just give a try to SOMA which is a great walking sim.

Making a space game like Freespace automatically cleaves your target audience into a very small chunk. Only PC's, and then only PC's with a joystick. Freespace could be played with just a mouse and keyboard, but that is anti fun. It could be put on consoles, but 3/4 of the controls would be removed. And a lot of the fun was the simulation part of the game, trying to operate a space fighter. You could dedicate all your staff and money to make a really great game. But then you aren't making a card game or some moba clone that is guaranteed to sell way more.

You do understand that an ambitious project requires more than coding knowledge - it require financial backing, knowledge base, discipline, and oversight. Kerbal and starmade were fun because i just built shit and it either worked or didn't (kerbal is hard as fuck for me, took me a long time to just get to the moon and I was never able to land and return)

The online universe. You had to limit flight to airplane speeds to accommodate other players and had to resort to supercruise to get anywhere because you couldn't fast forward Newtonian travel. Because you couldn't have real world velocities It screwed up travel to and from planets surfaces. Now thanks to all that focus on custom avatars, political stuff and selling custom crap, they haven't bothered to focus on actually completing the game.

The audio is worse. It also ruins Homeworld 1 with the way fighters work. If you buy the remaster you are also giving money to Gearbox. Buy the originals if you can.

The remaster ports the original game to Homeworld 2's engine, which kinda breaks the balance. The mechanics changed between the games and basically all fighters/corvettes/smaller ships are freaking useless in the remastered Homeworld 1.

EVE is unique, they have been there for 10 years, and they have done that since forever, maybe because thiefs are an actual threat, and they can quite literally steal everything you got if you let someone enter your corporation without judging someone right, he can, and he will destroy your corp, and everyone takes this seriously because it has happened

Yeah it was kinda dumb for them to put HW1 on 2's engine. Which gives HW1 a slight downgrade from the original. Atleast it looks, and sounds prettier. They also fixed formations in a patch a while back.

However, HW2R is a straight upgrade from the original since it's running HW2 on the upgraded HW2 engine. The audio and graphics are much better and the gameplay remains the same.

The remaster also comes with the originals and is the only way to get the originals via monitary transaction with out ordering a box off amazon or visiting thepiratebay.

HW1(original)>HW2(Remaster)>HW2(Original)>HW1(Remaster). Also play Cataclysm.

I'd recommend getting the Remaster. Plus most of the mods like Complex moved to HW2:Remastered.

>>
>>388437609

A little I guess but you really shouldn't go in expecting space or sci-fi from it. It's space opera with almost total focus on the opera part, they never explain any of the technology or how the battles really work. They keep shooting at each other for days but then some super strategist says to shoot harder and they suddenly win.

You should mostly watch the show for the characters. And never watch the post credits/next episode preview things, they spoil the hell out of future events.

That's what I mean. Campiness for it's own sake just makes me gag. Star Trek TOS is campy but charming because it had some sincerity and tried to tell an honest story. Stargate is isn't as good but it's along those lines. Farscape meanwhile intentionally turns it up to 11 and shoves it down your throat thinking it's being clever while it's really just being stupid "ironically".

Just watch the 110 episodes, and maybe the movies, the rest is optional and mostly trash.

The second OVA 4 or 5 on the list is just Reinhard fan fiction tier and literally has him study the greatest swordsmen in human history, that being Samurai of course, to fend off an assassin. And by study I mean read about it on a computer. When he catches the assassin's sword with the clap bullshit I just stopped the episode there and wondered why no one told me not to watch this trash.

The original 110 episodes series in great and should be watched. Just don't expect a ton of action as most of the show is a bunch of men sitting in a room talking about what they think of other group of men are going to do next, while the other group of men sit in a room discussing what to do next. Oh and the battles don't really make a whole lot of sense, just go with it and remember its basically napoleonic war in space.

With a small team you cannot produce anything on that scope.
You have no fucking idea how hard it its and how much it costs, even if you happen to produce your assets, there's no way you can make a game of that scale in a "few years" with no experience.Better to think small, start a small scale project and go from there, but when you actually start developing something you'll understand how much of a retard you were for even typing that

A nicer looking No Man's Sky without any fauna or flora and you can't land on half the celestial bodies. It has a f2p cash shop despite costing the price of a regular game. It takes hundreds to a thousand hours to unlock the "late game" ships. And even when you do unlock them your gameplay doesn't change, aside from now having to land at larger landing pads and not being able to visit outposts.

90% of your time will be spent jumping from star to star, to the point that you will want netflix or some other form of entertainment on another monitor. The game does sound good, and have good visuals. It also has some pretty good physics calculations going on, but it's severely lacking in things to do, places to see, people to talk to. The quintessential mile wide inch deep. Also the multiplayer is pointless, as half the game's population is made up of 50 year old Dads that would try to get you banned if you looked at them menacingly.

>>388443830
Can't. At least not in the state it is.
The amounts of RNG and grinding you need to do without exploits to have one of the 3 best ships on this game will numb you out and probably make you lose interest. On top of that there's the issue of the engineers.
Combat is meh. It usually resolves around who can out-turn the other and stay on that one's behind.
Devs are working on several things but they usually try to cater the oldfags who played the original games back in the 80s
Play it if you like to do some space trucking. It's pretty good at that.

Stay the fuck away from the official forums.

I was actually hoping they hadn't fixed that glitch that some anon spoke about with passenger missions. That way I could finally deck out a nice ship with good equipment without grinding weeks for it. Unfortunately after arriving at the destination it seemed to be patched.

I'm not grinding for fucking days at 4-5 mil per hour to afford some proper equipment for my pixel spaceship. What is wrong with this game.
>>
>>388444954
Yes. ETS with highways that were all straight lines, with no cities and no scenery other than a distant skyscape. You don't have to manage gearing or anything since you just set it on cruise control and wait until you arrive at your destination ten minutes later.
It's soul-crushingly, mind-numbingly boring.

The people developing the team are idiots and they have an echo chamber of idiots (the forum goers) that are constantly leading them in an awful direction. I abused many ""exploits"" and was able to get myself a Corvette. If I wanted to use it with friends (aka bounty hunting because that's the most exciting thing to do) I would have had to dedicate a real life day just to get that ship from one place to another. And the forum echo chamber tells them that this is good.
>>

Freelancer's community is very small, and there's not a lot of players.
The mod author is a guy named SWAT-OPR8R and he hates every other mod out there because they are trying to steal his playerbase. He's bitter because he spent years making a shitty mod with awful models and it gets about 10 people playing it, all of whom are his friends. He's been kicked out of the rest of the community (which is bad to begin with).
He's spent 15 years modding one game obsessively and proclaiming he's the greatest modder.

No dev wants to try realistic space combat that actually takes into account the actual environment that is space

There are no orbital mechanics in any of these space games. There are no tactics, or strategies, there is nothing new or exciting. It is all the same old WW2 fighters + naval battles but in spaaaaaace from 20 years ago, usually with a lot of space fantasy and magic thrown in. All of which serves as a crutch for the developers so they don't have to actually think about their design.

Low IQ mouthbreathers who think "space is boring" are a problem the industry and genre will never get past.
>>
>>388432453
This. Get fucked cunt, "mechanics will be deep"

>>
>>388443830
It looks pretty and has nice sounds

Those are the only two things the game has going for it. If you want actual gameplay, let alone fun gameplay, go elsewhere.
>>
>>388447724
There's fundamentally no way to cut down on the amount of menus the game has without cutting down on the depth the game has. The best they can do is organize them and make them easy to access, which they did with TC.

The last thing they need to do is try fixing the "problems" with the games. They should be playing to the games' strengths, adding more shit, giving it more depth. Sitting down and polishing their shit was exactly what they did with Rebirth. You simply can't have engaging space combat in a fundamentally imbalanced mess like a large universe of assorted shit like X has, so you do what X2/3 did and make acquiring the right equipment and ships be the bigger determinant in combat. You can't make the game easy to play an accessible without cutting down on the complexity that makes it enjoyable.
>>
Simple anon. Normies. Normies like games to play a specific way. Those things don't work in space very well so when combined you basically get Normie shit #5 in a different planet. But the quest hub is in space so it's a space game!

>>388447981
Maybe you should actually try playing the genre, or even looking at what's on offer.

There definitely are games which have tried to have proper newtonian physics. They're fucking shit. It's not enjoyable to play, fundamentally.
And no game can incorporate shit like orbital mechanics on a combat level, to do that and have it be anything but the biggest bore you need to turn it into at least a tactics game. Children of a Dead Earth does exactly this, try it if you want that.

>It is all the same 1old WW2 fighters + naval battles but in spaaaaaace from 20 years ago
Except there aren't. Nobody makes those games. The only game with vaguely classic space combat from the last decade I can think of is House of the Dying Sun, which was generally considered good if criminally short.

Engine failure, radiation, rouge asteroids and just imagine what kind of power source your packing if you have an interstellar capable ship and what would happen to anything around it if something went wrong. wish more games just let you play between ground and orbital stations, maybe a moon or two... I get the big idea of space is flying across galaxies, but I think you could do a better story in a tight system of a few spots, and make FTL this big entrance (like, normal flight would be the equiv of driving a car, but FTL vessels would be the equiv of airplanes)

i know, i know, idk though, E:D struck me as a simulator esque looking game when i first got it, thats probably just me though

i think they're doing more in the sense of expanding bases with players now towards a station in the middle of the galaxy, which might be a cool long term endeavour

Besides Eve, is there still some other active MMO that is not a themepark?

I have never played Freespace 2 and am now downloading it. What am I in for as a first timer? I've never finished a space sim and have only played Freelancer extensively.

>simulator esque looking game when I first got it
That's an issue with the fan base. For a lot of people, it's a simulator when it's convenient and adheres to their desires. Such as outfitting of weapons, but not methods of travel.

I hope you have a joystick.
>>
>>388455796
There's a mod you can get for Freespace Open that lets you steer with Freelancer-like mouse controls that works pretty well
>>
>>388434868

Any way to make this work on new (W7 and above) OS?
>>
>>388455667
Pick up a joystick. Doesn't need to be a good one, and definitely not a HOTAS, but pick one up.

You're in for some damn good combat, far better than the tedious shit in Freelancer.

Get ready to DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT
>>
I haven't played E:D since engineers update.
Does the guardians and commanders updates add enough shit to make it worth coming back?
Sharing your bridge sounds neat, but it's not space legs is it?

I played through FS1 with just a mouse and I didnt think it was too awful

You just have to keep in mind the ship has a fixed turning speed so you have to use slower deliberate movement instead of fast movements, otherwise a lot of your motion will be eaten and youll have to pick up your mouse a lot more often

And jack up the sensitivity to max

At least you are not giving bux to nu-paradox. Infesting the new games with mana and SJW stuff.
And ban people who call their mechanics mana on their foruns.

It runs flawlessly on my 32 bit W10 portable but I need to use a virtual machine on my desktop. It also works great in WINE.
>>
>>388456063
Even the developers themselves put it as "it's technically playable with a mouse, but really you need a joystick".

You CAN do it, but holding turns can get tedious as shit in particular.

Google Freespace Open. It's a sourceport, and fixes a bunch of shit how sourceports normally do.
You only the need base program and maybe the MediaVPs for a pretty good grafix upgrade if you want it.

So is someone gonna start a new thread?

I agree. I'm surprised that they aren't more sympathetic but they are obviously just selfish degenerates most of the time.
>>
>>388455856
Here's the link to that

How it works is middle click to toggle Freelancer-style turning where you turn at a constant rate depending on how far your mouse is from the crosshair

>Sharing your bridge
Unless there's something new I don't know about, you don't share the bridge. You just lose a few guns that someone else takes over as a turret.

So it's a modern piece of art, criticizing the juvebile ideia of space flight.
And peopl say video games aren't art!
