I think the reason most people hated it, is because they played it when it first came out. I did, hated it. SOTFS and a bunch of patches eventually fixed a lot of the game, but most people never went back and gave it a second chance. I'm glad I did though. I love it now.

And if you look closely, you'll see that DaS2 is last, but sotfs is on par with DeS and DaS, because sotfs is miles above DaS2 vanilla.

BB is the game with least replayability and yet I finished it 20 times in the same area/boss order. BB and DaS3 just feel great to play, while DaS may be not linear at all, it's less fun, it's clunky, it's stiff, animations aren't as cool, weapons aren't as cool, bosses aren't as cool, and pretty much everything except the world design is done better in the later games..
