Hello /v/! Today I am going to be showing you a glitch in Half-Life 2 that allows you to gain infinite crowbars!
The process begins right here, just as the teleport cutscene ends.

Now, the first step is to grab this crate, right here.

Go ahead and grab that last barrel, climb your barrel staircase and place your last barrel on top of the crate. Be sure that the hole on the barrel is facing UP, as you will not be able to grab it in the next part if its not facing up

Now barney will spawn and drop you your crowbar. To get infinite crowbars, you only have to backtrack to the transformers and (while destroying and wood in your path), and repeat the climb. Most of the props should remain, with the exception of the top barrel, so you will have to grab one each time

Now, I've been collecting crowbars for a while.
After a while there get to be a bit too many barneys on the top ledge, and they get a bit too hard to manage, but it IS doable.
Now, if you do this enough times, you'll have enough crowbars to beat every valve employee into submission!

It seems to be pretty random.
Sometimes, the barney that grabs the ledge will also do the dialogue.
Other times, he will just grab the ledge while another barney does the dialogue.
And often, one barney grabs the ledge, one says "Hey Gordon!" and another finishes the dialogue. The ledge barney will always drop the crowbar, even if he doesn't do the animations

Sometimes, though, the process doesn't work out as planned, and a random barney just grabs the ledge and hogs it. It has to be the barney that comes out of the door, or else nothing happens at all.

I'm pretty sure each time you go through the level transition from the transformer yard to the barney ledge it resets the trigger that brings barney out.
It also helps that you are avoiding the regular level transition.
On a side note, barney 2 is sad barney 1 stole the ledge.

I'd say that it holds up maintaining the atmosphere pretty well. It's mostly a lighting update that makes use of source 2013 features, as well as a few other minor tweaks.
It actually preserves the atmosphere pretty well, compared to cinematic mod 2013.

HL2 is so overrated. i mean it isn't a very good game. It's drags on and is incredibly boring. The argument that it was innovative in its time doesn't work either. That might be true of HL1 but for HL2 it isn't true.

Odessa_Cubbage_bust_NLO.jpg
390KB, 696x822px
Daily Reminder that Cubbage is an accident:

In the playable Half-Life 2 Beta, a generic citizen named "RPGGuy" appears at New Little Odessa. Interestingly, three extremely early voice clips for Odessa can be found in the sound/vo/coast/ folder, but there is no model for him. In these clips, he has a much younger, nasal voice.

Originally, Odessa Cubbage was to pick up the RPG when the gunship arrived, show the player how to fight it, before being killed. But this proved to be a sticky tangle, and the team instead decided to have him remain in the basement the entire sequence. However in the game files, there is still a sound path called: cubdeath1.wav

Series' writer Marc Laidlaw originally found the name Odessa Cubbage in his spam filter, and thought that it carried quite a character with it, leading him to replace the RPG guy with a standalone character named Odessa Cubbage. He also stated that Cubbage exists solely to give the player a rocket launcher.

The whole physics thing didn't take off and everything is still glued to the floor these days which makes HL2 surprisingly unique in that regard. Sure, you've got your share of samey seesaw puzzles but you can also throw toilets at people and the whole Sandtraps section is absolute kino. Also, most of its physics gameplay imitators just did not do a very good job at it.

The pacing and general level variety is superb. Combined with trademark Half-Life "you are Freeman and you never ever see the world outside of his perspective" approach, it really makes it feel like a long journey. I heard the game being compared to a road movie and I think it's a pretty sensible way to look at it. Compare it to games like Butcher Bay or TNO. They're great and similar in many ways but the pacing is often just off and the way the game wants you to believe you've been travelling, for example, around many places in Europe just isn't very convincing since the travelling process is done in cutscenes.

Also, the sound design is great except for weapons, what the fuck happened there? and so is Viktor Antonov's art direction. The world feels plausible and the clash between old architecture and grey, black and blue sharp-angled Combine installations works very well.

I also really like how the music is handled with short but well done tracks that only start playing at specific moments during the gameplay. The moment when you finally exit the Ravenholm mines and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ErPil7jWxE starts playing is absolutely priceless.

I swear, "HL2 is overrated/not good/did not age well" is "Sonic was never good" of FPS games. It might not be the absolute 10/10 masterpiece many people claim it is but it's a very good and unique game with a lot of details put into it. There's a fucking reason it's still held so highly and people wanted that fat fuck to finally continue the series for so long.
>>
>>388408307
I'm far more of a fan of Halo's "the music begins and continues to play until the player reaches a certain point."

>>
>>388408584
I personally like Requiem for Ravenholm better but yes, that is my point. Half-Life 2 has a lot of memorable moments when music kicks in.
>>
>>388408307
>trademark Half-Life "you are Freeman and you never ever see the world outside of his perspective" approach
This was one of it's greatest strengths, for a lot of people this was the first game series like this that they played, where every event and scene takes place during gameplay or from the gameplay perspective of Gordon's point of view.
Some people even used to use the term "Half-Life moments" to describe events in a game (Dead Space was a pretty good example) that happened seamlessly while playing where they would be a cutscene that pulled control away from you in another game.

HL2 set so many bars at the same time that most games even today can't reach the same level. Physics, music, characters, graphics (still holds up today IMO), level design and so on were all at least 8/10. Most games can only reach that level on a few things, graphics mostly.
>>

Different triggers and a race condition?
>>
>>388408654
>This was one of it's greatest strengths
It still is. I honestly cannot remember other games which actually followed this approach down to a T. At the very least loading screen transitions still happen outside of the character's point of view.

Totally! The Pistol and SMG have pretty weak sounds, but the Pulse Rifle, Grav Gun, Shotgun and Revolver are awesome. I also like that each gun is special. People complain that there arent as many guns in HL2 as in HL1 and I get that, but every gun in HL2 has a specific use and I think that might be a better approach than gun glut.

The girls are hot but it's not about women per se. The writing is great, the atmosphere is amazing and completely unique and there are many ways (not THAT many, though) to approach your quests. It does vampires as close to perfect as it can possibly get.

However, it's unfinished and unofficial patches are mandatory. They fix pretty much all the bugs but the final part of the game is basically all combat (and combat isn't very good here).

I didn't know what else to call it. Inferior resistance fighting against a superior force, you being a guy who is really good at surviving and killing. That itself isn't very uncommon but the game makes it feel and seem like you aren't just steamrolling through waves of enemies but rather fighting a dirty war against the occupation force. Taking out smaller outposts, destroying their infrastructure and equipment (especially in the early game) and being a thorn in their side rather than an outright one man army is a good feel.

What is the best level in HL2?

I'm a big fan of Highway 17 and Nova Prospekt myself.

Sandtraps is a bit of a letdown but at least it isn't too long.

When I think of HL2 I always think in my mind that I hate Sandtraps or Route Canal or The Citadel but when I play them again I am always like "Huh, that was fun"

I don't know why they are always registered as bad in my mind. I think its because Highway 17 is so good and everything after it seems like a lowpoint.

Any HL level in a fucking mine is terrible though. Fucking get rid of Mine levels
>>
>>388414585

It's not my favourite level but I always look forward to the levels right after Nova Prospekt. Urban warfare is my drug.
>>
What's the difference between Xash3D and Xash3D FWGS?
I decided to replay original HL with expansions, but which version is the best? Both seem run the game just fine.

I dont remember whether its from ep2 or not but the part where you hold off against the ant lions in the mine like a scene from fucking aliens was top tier.

Also the ending to ep2 felt like a true final boss kind of level. It was like half life distilled down to it's purest form and injected in to one level.

That's not Half-Life 2: Substance where you can play as the Snakes and Gray Fox with a campaign that adds new enemies as well as new events and shit. SMOD before SMOD was SMOD.
>>
>>388415857
It felt like a desperate last push all the way through and i loved it. The hunters were actually a challenge to beat and scooting around the map, using cabins/abandoned buildings as cover and luring the hunters around the back of them and blasting them with the shotgun through the window will be a memory ill never forget.

When I play half life 2 the amount of interactable objects astonishes me compared to modern games. When I throw a nade into a room and objects go flying everywhere it's just something that doesn't happen in other games

Damn that sounds like fun, I unironically enjoyed Highway 17, the wide open road, would have been neat to have a open world mod like that, probably too ambitious for the modder to finish though.
