>people UNIRONICALLY consider baby shit like Spelunky and FTL roguelikes
You don't do this, right /v/?
wtf is a roguelike?
>>388394363
A game that is like Rogue.
>>388394193
The term has evolved to mean "procedurally generated and/or randomized layouts with randomized loot." Go ahead and be mad about it but it's too late.
>>388394652
It just annoys me because a shit indie game that is procedurally generated and maybe from time to time kills you has nothing on a deep and difficult game like Cataclysm or NetHack
>>388394652
the term is actually rogue-lite or rogue-like-like. but since so many people have neither played rogue or a rogue-like they get confused and use the wrong word.
why does it matter
genre doesn't matter
>>388394738
Nobody wants to use phrases like Rogue-lite because then you have explain the difference between it and Rogue-like, probably. That's assuming your audience even knows what the fuck Rogue is.
It doesn't matter whether or not their usage is wrong, because people are going to use Rogue-like to describe these games. You'll be fighting a losing battle trying to stem the tide.

shut the fuck up dumb frog poster

t. couldn't figure out what the symbols mean

>babyshit like FTL
Nigger I have 1000000% in Isaac and I cant beat FTL on anything other than easy without Advanced Edition content.
Roguelikes are I think the definition of an anti-fun video game genre by far. Video games are not supposed to have randomized level design. It's just not good.
>>388395589
Makes sense seeming how Isaac isn't a roguelike
>>388394731
>Cataclysm
>NetHack
>difficult
Anon, I had more problems in FTL than I ever did with either of those 2 games. Though I agree, FTL isn't roguelike.
>>388396643
Cataclysm is as hard as you want it to be, there are plenty of ways to hamstring yourself and up the difficulty if its too easy, and its just as easy to play on godmode if you so desire. There is no set or standard difficulty as far as I know. I don't know how it stacks up to rogue proper though, I'm a casual
>>388394193
Just call classical roguelikes "procedurally generated turn-based dungeon crawlers with permadeath". No more confusion.
