Dark Cloud 1 was great right up until the second form of the last boss, the one that can only be hit by ranged attacks that were inferior the entire game so nobody with any sense levelled their weapons at all and the unblockable attack
I had to go in with my inventory filled to the brim with healing items and just lamed it out

My MC hadn't had to hit any enemy including bosses more than twice for the past 3 dungeons, that final boss was some crap

Both forms of the final boss were bullshit but my Xiao was a fucking thundercat by that point in the game. Got a double impact from a random treasure chest and she became my go-to for dealing with anyone with strong melee attacks.

You do know that you can actually hit him with the non-ranged chars in the second part? Basically, there are points in the boss fight where the boss lowers its head to the ground, and you get a chance to strike it in the mouth. But he only lowers his head for a short period of time, so you'd have to use a Dran's Feather to get to it in time. I used mostly Toan in that battle with an OP Sun Sword and the fight didn't last long.
