amiibo were awesome as trainable AI in Smash. Acceptable as solely cosmetic items in Mario Kart and such. But they've gotten out of fucking hand.

Friendly reminder that so far Nintendo has not officially and fully confirmed that stuff such as Fusion Mode and the art galleries are amiibo exclusive. All they have said is that these features are unlocked with amiibo, but never have they said it was exclusive. In contrast, features such as the reserve tanks HAVE been confirmed to be amiibo exclusive. I now direct your attention to this video:

At 5:10 IGN asks if these features are only unlocked with the amiibo, but notice the Nintendo rep does not outright say yes, they just say they are unlocked with the amiibo, confirming what is already known; the amiibo are a method to unlock these features. This is very suspicious wording, most likely because they want to be careful with what they say; why not just answer yes? They want consumers to believe that these features are amiibo exclusive so they'll be bought, when they really aren't. We can infer that just beating the game won't unlock these things, but there remains the possibility that something more may do it. Perhaps you need 100%, maybe a speed run playthrough, maybe a combination of both, maybe reaching a certain room in a certain (think secret message from Fusion), or something else.

Having amiibo makes it easier to unlock. In Star Fox Zero they had a special vehicle unlocked by doing end game content, OR just use amibo to get it right away. In Pokken Tournament you need to beat the story mode to use Shadow Mewtwo, OR use the exclusive amiibo card to use him right away. Keeping Fusion mode in the game but allowing you to fast-track it with the amiibo would be the same exact shit.

Actually, it mostly describes action platformers that have a wide area to explore, and has new areas unlocked by getting new abilities. Generally areas with entrances you had to pass by earlier due to not having said ability (such as double jump, morph ball, whatever). I like the term, mainly because it is one word and gives a general idea of the structure of the game. Yeah it's meaningless for Metroid games, but same with "diablo style games" for the Diablo series. The title was originally used to describe the Castlevania games that were styled after Metroid, compared to the "classicvania" games before it.
