So now that Valve is officially dead to us just like Half-Life , let's get a remembrance thread. Y'know, going back to the old days. Back when Valve wasn't a greedy corporation, but rather a developer by the gamers for the gamers. Back when they used to honestly care about their craft. How was your first time playing TF2? When did you discover Half-Life? When did you realize Valve started turning to the dark side and stopped caring about everything but money?

I will repost this every chance I get to spread the word:

Today, I went from an 88 game wishlist on Steam to an 18 game wishlist. I went through my entire wishlist and found the games that existed on gog, the humble store, and on consoles, and got rid of them one by one. For the 18 remaining, I will probably email the indie developers if I can pay them directly with paypal for a steam cd key, and for the non-indie games I will probably purchase them on g2a. If neither of those options exist, I just won't purchase them.

We can get our games without Steam, guys. We can give them the finger. You don't have to give up your current games, and you don't have to delete your Steam account, but you CAN stop all future purchases and you CAN ask your friends and family to do the same.

>>
>>388366463
Fuck, I haven't listened to that song in ages. Valve got me into The National which made me start reading Pitchfork which got me to listen to In The Aeroplane Over The See which made me start posting on /mu/ more than /v/. So I guess Portal 2 was good for something I guess.
>>
>>388367481
People probably know the alternative. There are other reasons they don't use them.
Also, it's not your job to that. Advertising is their resposabilty.
>>
>>388367849
But why should they hold onto Steam so strongly? They don't care about what their customers want anymore. Artifact is the strongest proof of that. With L I T E R A L phone games being released these days as a secondary proof. Steam hasn't done shit other than MUH SALES. And you can get just about as good as sales on the Humble Store for at least MOST of your games.
>>
>>388368190
Steam works fine and you don't know what Valve are thinking, you're just memeing. You may not like what they're doing, and even I don't care about it either, but their other shit is still good.
Why would I switch?
>>
>>388366463

>>

The main writer for Half Life quit Valve a while back, and recently wrote a blogpost giving the gist of Episode 3's plot.
tl;dr Half Life 2+episodes were pointless because the Combine is just too strong to be defeated
He closed it by saying how Valve has completely changed
>>
>>388369615
I've considered it and decided not to.
Unlike you, I don't have any kind of grudge with Valve and steam works perfectly fine.

The writer behind Half Life released the ending of HL3 to the internet realized that Valve will never make it. The last paragraph is a subtle message straight to Valve and Gabe.
>>
>>388369845
Like I said, you don't have to switch, you can purchase from other places, like the Humble Store. They give out Steam Keys after purchasing. If it's an indie game, you could make sure your money goes straight to the developer by asking if you can pay them directly through paypal for a steam key. I just want you to consider the alternatives.

Directly from their employee handbook, it states that you only work on a project if you think the customer wants it or it's good for the customer. We both agree that Artifact isn't any of that. They don't give a fuck anymore.

>>
>>388372143
>when
When the service no longer provides a wide variety of games with a good inrerface for playing games, with a friends system, which everyone already uses all of.

I know the valve makeup and handbook you are referring to, how they make games. In truth, I get where you're coming from, but since I care about the service, and not the quality of games they release as Valve, it actually doesn't matter if Valvee cares or does not care. As long as they host a good service, I couldn't care less.

You're just bearing a grudge and being irrational.
>>
>>388366463
They were always greedy. Do you think Gabe got to 2.2 Billion net worth by being generous? Companies are not your friends. Gabe literally tried to trick some poor kid into coming to the USA by promising him a job so he could arrest him for leaking the HL2 code. And that was over a decade ago.
>>
>>388372713
I am bearing a grudge, but I don't believe I'm being irrational. We don't have to use Steam to get all of our games. I promise you this. If you're fine with their service, fine. But I want people to be fully aware of the alternatives they could be making to send a message to Valve. A message that clearly states "Fuck off."

I really do hope this TCG turns into a big fucking flop. TCG is already over saturated. Unfortunately it won't do much damage to them considering how TCG is a safe bet to make. Cheap to develop and easy to profit off of. On top of this, Valve already has the assets for most of the game done via Dota2.

2009 was the first year where I noticed their Jewry started to fester. The announcement of L4D2 just a year after L4D1 (a game that was literally left for dead). I forgave them since I loved the characters of L4D2 and it was overall a better experience and wished L4D2 was L4D1.

That's subjective and on top of that, it was more about the atmosphere that these games produced. You don't really make what you want at the company. You have an idea of what you'd like to make for the company and you have to convince coworkers that its worth working on it and consider if its a project that a customer actually wants. Portal and Portal 2 are and will forever remain my favorite games. I don't give a single shit about what Valve does now . TF2 is a game that i got in a few years ago, and now i have 1000hrs+ in this abandoned game. Valve maybe was once a gr8 company, but what they are doing now... It just breaks my heart to see them take all that they have made, and throw it in the fucking garbage. People change, everyone does, for the better or worse, i just hoped that valve would stay the same.

Maybe one day we will see HL3 and/or Portal 3, no matter what anyone says, i still have that little bit of hope that maybe MAYBE they will see the error in their ways, not listening to the people who made them what they are, and make another Valve single player experience.

why would anyone work on a project if they don't enjoy it?
>>
>>388376585
but it's not what I want REEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>388376720
Is it what you want, then?

>>388376715
Supposedly, at Valve, you don't have to, but you gotta work on something.
>>
>>388376538
But Anon... they tried to enter more than once.
But nothing works HL on DC/PS2, HL2 on XBOX and The Orange Box on PS3/X360 were commercial failures.
And average console owner doesn't give shit about Valve.
>>
>>388376501
lots of games wouldn't even have the capability of modding if it weren't for easy steamworks integration
>>
>>388376851
What makes you say that?
>>
>>388376715
leaders and followers anon. Which are you? The leaders convince the followers to work on their projects. The chad dev will always have virgin codemonkeys underneath him to complete projects.

>You can thank them for steamworks

So I can thank them for making it mandatory for many mods to having to use Steamworks? You do realize that Steamworks has major flaws right? Because Valve is a company, it has guidelines for what can be put on Steamworks so anything lewd or is based off another work will be taken down. I seen a CIV 5 Shrek nation be taken down because it had fucking Shrek ffs. Also modding communities had fansites filled with mods long (15 years) before Steamsworks. So no, I won't thank Steamworks.

>Making modding easily available for thousands of games who otherwise wouldn't have it.

Because they don't use google? How hard is to type in "Skyrim mods" to find sites like Nexus?

>You can thank them for VAC

Yes, a very out of date and shit anti-cheating program that constantly is one step behind the amount of cheaters that fill TF2 and CS with. You're acting as if anti-cheating software wasn't invented until Valve. Ever heard of Punkbuster (used in Gamespy hosted servers) among others?

>You can thank them for putting PC gaming on life support and saving it.

There's nothing to claim they'd have saved it. Valve got lucky with Steam in terms of digital distribution as they arrived in the gates early in 2003. It wasn't until 2007 that you saw major third party devs put their games on Steam. Had they not, someone else would've come in. GoG for example exists and so does Origin. Whether you hate Origin or not, the point is that as long as a market is uncontested, someone will fill in the void.

You realize other websites would be required to take down those mods, for example, shrek, if the company owning shrek filed a complaint right?

>lots of games wouldn't even have the capability of modding

Such as? There are far superior thirdparty tools out there for Skyrim then that of the built-in Steamworks program.

I wouldn't say that I "love Valve", but have they done something that I'm supposed to be angry about? I definitely feel like I'm missing something.

Back to /a/ you go!! You sound like faggots.

You're probably sore losers that get upset when someone around you asks you a question because it triggers your autism. Your life must be sad.

I'm a thinking and logical man. Give me a good reason why SPOONFEEDING is bad.

Free browser games are on steam, and you PAY to play them
>>
>>388378218
They attempted Paid mods, they made TF2 free to play (which sucks for people who bought it beforehand), they think we want a Hearthstone clone, Steam Greenlight and Early Access? Where have you been?
>>
>>388378350
It created a generation of stuck up pussies who want everything delivered to them and thus don't possess half the abilities their parents and grandparents had.

I've been around, but pretty busy I guess, because I have no idea what you're talking about. What's Steam Greenlight?

Doesn't sound enough to warrant the autism.
It's fine, though. No one is going to stop you from trying to boycott the company or whatever you guys think you're doing.

The winning move would've been to release Episode 3 on schedule. Valve blew it by delaying it.This is their own fault.

is anyone else genuinely depressed by this? i haven't felt good for a few days. it felt like reading an obituary, at the same time, i could imagine myself playing it and some cutscenes, things i'll never get to do or see. half-life is permanently attached to my childhood and i became an adult, lived, and will die without seeing or experiencing a genuine outcome to this trilogy.

if the point behind this is to make everyone wait long enough to forget about it, then suddenly one day hl3 is released like we just traveled through time however many amount of years, it'd make artistic sense but it would still be extremely cruel. this game is never coming out. i hate you valve, and fuck you, gabe. you owe tens of millions of people an apology, and if you don't, stop a gaybreathing.

>>388373260

Counterpoint. Why would they give a shit about critical or community acclaim? They'll have mad back their investment on day one with pre-orders, guaranteed.

There's no loss at stake for Valve in releasing or not releasing. They simply don't give a shit about producing anymore, they're rather publish and make bank with little to no effort.

... the man did craft and write the entire series.

Remember what happened to Mass Effect when Karpyshyn was booted out?
