When I was younger I was huge into both the Half-life 1 and 2 modding scenes. I lost interest after a while and when I returned to it things didn't really seem the same. What caused this downfall in source modding? Were tools changed? I know the jump to Source 2 had some form of effect on this, but I want to know what happened.

This. I have fond memories of hours spent on playing Zombie Panic!: Source, Zombie Master, Empires, Obsidian Conflict/Synergy, etc., by that era is long gone. There's a bunch of cool Sven Co-op servers, though. "Cool" if you enjoy memes, like a Linkin Park song playing after you type "crawling" into the chat.

Has a different engine surpassed it in terms of user-created content? It definitely wasn't perfect but I think there's still a lot that can be done with it so long as people have ideas.

Do you own Garry's Mod, OP? That's where Source modding is at right now. If you filter out Trouble at Terrorist Town and DarkRP, there's still some pretty fresh stuff in there, like the recent "Slashers" gamemode.

Man I wish more people played this mod, it's one of the few good FPS/RTS hybrids and the only with with proper vehicles as far as I know.A shame that the tanks handle like ass
