The only version of Secret of Mana available for purchase in North America that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and has a sensible control is the Original Wii Virtual Console version and if one doesn't have a Wii it's not gonna be less expensive than the PS4/Vita/Steam version.

replayed the snes version not long ago, that game had huge game design flaws. And it's not only the battle mechanics, the maps and difficulty curves is are bad. The story makes little sense, most character arcs being 2 or maybe 3 encounter in the whole game. The end is a rush job, plain and simple. orbs that used to rare become handled down like candies, item you loot suddenly double your stats and break the game, but who cares because what's left to do in the game is short as all shit.
if it werent for a completionist run and 2-3 hours of magi/leveling that serves no purpose because the last boss requires a the sword and one spell, this game would be extremely short.

yea theres a mod out for it. Fair warning tho - the there are two versions of the mod: one is a general overhaul mod and the other is one that fixes bugs like crit and evade not working and other weird shit. The just fix mod however makes the the game super unbalanced as even enemies are able to crit and mid to late game fights end up being rocket tag were whoever crits first wins (hawk and kevin by extension is extremely broken because of double attack and crit fishing).
