Might be more comfortable doing it. Plus its easier to copy all the details when you can both watch, turn around and touch the shapes. Sculpted models have been a thing in animation since early days, for example deer horns in Disney's Bambi and Cruella De Vil's car were made as sculpted models first so it would be easier to photograph them from any angle and then draw on top of them. Much easier to maintain proportions when the subject is turning in frame.
