Unfortunately it can one bad practice or a smidge of bad PR to kill a game, especially a new IP. Established franchises will likely sell regardless, but new things like Evolve, Lawbreakers, and even Battleborn are at the mercy of the press, the public, and the current industry environment.

The press' focus on Evolve's big fat DLC was no doubt a turn-off for a lot of fans in an already fairly new kind of game that people were uncertain about.

Battleborn and Lawbreakers are, at a glance, 'shooting games with heroes' - when something that fits into that description already exists, it's huge, and it's made and published by Blizzard; competing against something like that was asking for trouble. Randy and CliffyB didn't help matters by forgetting that they are both equally garbage at PR and, as the faces of their company, made a bunch of retarded monkey noises in the form of tweets etc., which fucks with the game their development teams no doubt worked hard to put out.

It doesn't matter how good your game is, if you can't get in good with the people - your potential fans - you're screwed.

Also it's Valve's fault HL died.
For whatever reason they took too long to release Ep3/HL3 until it became a Duke Nukem Forever level meme game that would never have lived up to its legacy. GabeN steering the company towards money-grubbing lootboxes and paid mods didn't help either. We even know for sure that 'not much actual writing happens at Valve anymore'

Mechanically you can do a lot more. Game development is easier than it used to be so more good games are coming out. The high degree of hardware available offers a lot of freedom as to what can be done with games, etc.

I really liked Evolve. I would like more of its universe and characters.

They reacted too slow to fix their stupidity though. DLC in a gameplay content starved game shouldn't have been even considered.

Behemoth was fun until they nerfed it into uselessness, now you have a 10 dollars literal sack of potatoes. The most fun was Wraith and everyone was mad at people playing Wraith because it was the only monster to have a 1vs4 potential at some point.

Evolve was shit because each match was 30 minutes of running around in a circle and 2 minutes of combat.

The reason why this works in games like Dead by Daylight is because the one "monster" is the one hunting.

What is more fun? Hide and seek with 3 seekers and one hider who is allowed to push you down and is 3 times faster than you at running? Or hide and seek with 3 hiders and one seeker who is only slightly faster than the hiders?
