Wrong. It's still far more competent than most games in every single aspect.

Valve to fix the Steam version of HL1, utterly regressed from the 98 release

>No Shadows
>Textures filtered twice, when they were no designed with no filtering in mind
>No surround sound
>Worse lighting, missing Overbright
>No Headbobing, or at least an option for it
>Gimped Strafe jumping, because gotta go slow
>Steampipe breaks most mods

It's sad people buying it on Steam don't experience the real thing
>>
>>388336535
First level in 2 was kind of mediocre because all you have is a crowbar and a pistol but it starts to pick up from there real quick. Game becomes a 10/10 at ravenholm

But they won't
Since 2013 Half Life 2 characters don't even blink outside of scripted events, still haven't fixed it
>>
>>388336685
Honestly, HL2 is one that really hasn't aged. I find all of lat game city 17 a slodge, there's just something so dull and annoying about fighting the combine soldiers. There are a lot of great moments, but the whole thing has lost it's luster to me now and I'm someone who replays through hl1 at least once a year as that game really does have it.
>>
>>388333356
This, goldscript got crazy polished through the years, since 2013 we have raw mouse input and no fps cap, still play vanilla hlDM till this day, not much worse than q3a/live really.
>>
>>388336956
I'm the opposite. I find Half life 1 hard to playthrough because of how boring it is visually. And 2 to me is amazing to replay. It's one of the few games I make sure to replay every winter. I also am extremely fond of the amount of level variety in 2. One level you're racing through the swampy canals and another you are fighting off zombies and headcrabs in an abandoned town.
>>
I don't think either HL1 or HL2 have aged. Kind of a pointless conversation, they're both pretty much the same game if you want to look at it abstractly.
>>
is there a mod that skips the first half hour of HL1?

>>388337318

I can somewhat recall Dark Souls' map from memory, but only in terms of retracing it by walking through it in my head, but I guess that's how it would be for most. I'm pretty sure I got it decently accurate for the major areas, but the small tunnels in some parts like valley of drakes->darkroot is a bit iffy in terms of height differences. It sort of helps that I've speedrunned the game a bunch so it's pretty etched in my head as it is, just a matter of retracing steps to actually build up a coherent map mentally. Could probably not recreate that on paper nearly as well as that though, breddy gud.

There are shadows, both NPC and buildings
>Textures filtered twice, when they were no designed with no filtering in mind
Don't understand the problem with this
>No surround sound
False, there is definitely surround sound
>Worse lighting, missing Overbright
Might be true, I remember that lighting was better on my old computer than a modern system
>No Headbobbing, or at least an option for it
I hate headbobbing, but you can use the console to customize headbobbing if you didn't know
>Gimped Strafe jumping, because gotta go slow
False, I can bunnyhop just fine on the campaign
>Steampipe breaks most mods
Definitely true, couldn't finish hazard course because of this

Half Life on Steam is fine except for modding since Steampipe
>>
>>388336956

yeah that was biggest letdown for me in hl2, especially because 2003 E3 show had those couple smooth videos with streetfighting going on at city17 and strider attack on rebels.

What we got instead wasn't an open city square with striders crawling out of streetcorners, but a forced maze going through the messy and unaesthetic ruins. Striders just stumbled around in distance, feeling more like moving turrets than menacing alien war machine.

The another video with streetfights going on and barney fighting along your side turned into boring zombie fighting through an apartment complex.

I admit the hl2 beta videos were scripted as hell but I wouldn't have minded those scripted sequences as long as they would've transferred into solid gameplay after

HL 1 is still a fun thrilling experience. Can't really say this about HL 2. In some places it doesn't feel like a game but like an ad for Valve's SOURCE engine. Look at all the cool stuff it can do, please licence our engine! The guns were nerfed for some reason, the maps don't feel as interesting. The driving sequences feel forced and the maps you drive in are mostly barren. Forced meme jokes from the start to create a more "cohesive" narrative that falls flat on its face. Lame physics showcase puzzles. Don't feel like going through everything.

Portal 1 was a fantastic short experiment. It is original but also not very long.
Portal 2 is a good game, which may be a little too wacky on many occasions. The idea that Portal 2 and HL1 are in the same universe is bizarre and jarring.

He is likely referring to the tonal differences between the two games. Portal is goofy to the point where the few characters the games do have are very eccentric to comedic effect. Half-Life is not completely devoid of humor but it's hard to imagine those characters in the same universe.

That's a pretty stupid complaint, if you want to call it that. Both games have oppressive, alien forces subjugating humans. One is just humorous, the other is bleak; it's a parity that ties into how Black Mesa and Aperture are characteristically different, but working for the same goal.

Too pleb to understand. It only is weird if you think it is also weird that a writer couldn't individually write a story with these two tones. Half-Life 2-hating losers strike out once again

HL2 and it's sequels are like really fun Sci-fi blockbusters, but HL1 is like a finely crafted short film. Not because of length but because of subtly (even though it's not that subtle?) and the close setting. I duno. Just good.

Is this a nostalgia thread because I'm feeling it and it hurts. All those mods, all those games, all those people you'll never talk to again, all those hours spent just having fun. I still remember playing Firearms for the first time and having my mind blown that you could use a bipod and suppress your MP5 in real time (not sure how realistic that was but cool as fuck anyway). I'm still butthurt over Steam even more than a decade later even though, admittedly, it has improved a lot.

I don't really remember the enemies being bullet sponges. Non-humans were just begging to get shotgunned, most of the soldiers you could just grenade or contact grenade and clean up with the weapons, and the late game had so much powerful shit that enemies just got melted. I guess if you use the SMG all the way through it's a bit dull, but that's why there are so many weapons.
>>
>>388344820
Not the military. But Black Ops. When military failed and some were even helping the employees of Black Mesa, they sent in the secret special forces. Their mission: kill everything that moves.

>I'm not sure if there's currently a big difference between the free version and the paid version.
There's a bunch of visual differences, since free version is the mod from like 2011 and they kept adding new assets to it. The guns in paid look more like original ones, so instead of pretty much SPAS-12 in free you get that weird and really mangled SPAS-12 in paid which looks more faithful to the original. This is a plus to some and a minus to others. There are also balance changes, some guns were way to good in free, like the aforementioned shotgun and Glock (no, really). Most people also though HECU Marines were too much of a pain in free (loved them, personally), so their AI in paid is completely different.

IMO try free now and buy paid if you like it for eventual Xen. That's what I did, free completely blew me away with the level of detail they added to the game to make it look fresh and new while still being Half-Life that I loved.

Bullet sponge enemies are literally fine in a lot of situations. The only time they're bad is when every single enemy is a bullet sponge (not the case in HL) and when you can't get power weapons that blow them away (not the case in HL).

This is the shittiest argument for why Half Life is good. Don't care about some fan-fiction script, the thing about Half-Life is it's gameplay and then secondarily it's fiction. Valve will make Half-Life if they ever find a reason to make Half-Life, and then we can celebrate but not until. Because nothing will be Half-Life unless it pushes boundaries and comes from Valve. Anything else is not enough.

>Some no-name cunts made Black Mesa and sure, it took a while, it wasn't perfect, but it was made.
It took like ten years and it's still not finished. They also bumped it from a free mod to a paid game.

You look like a loser trying to reason that Black Mesa is somehow not a feat, or at least not noteworthy. No one cares if it didn't impress YOU or not, it seemed to impress plenty.
>>
>>388355429
I followed it since it was announced and the entire way it was plagued by development problems and sat for months at a time without any progress being made. Then it was "released" unfinished and inferior to the original in every way except grafix but retards ate it up and had the gall to say it was as good or better than the original and anyone who prefers the original is just nostalgic.

What makes a man turn Contrarian Kiff?
>>
>>388356151
>But you know what? None of that stuff really matters. Because Half-Life, like its sequel, is great not for its bullet-point features, but for the way it pioneered the experience of really being in the first-person perspective, and not just using it as a disembodied floating gun platform. And Black Mesa doesn't just maintain that feeling, it's where the bulk of the really worthwhile improvements have been made.
this is the mindset of the average black mesa fan

The game is a fucking masterpiece that I still play to this very day. Exploring the early game (everything pre-resonance cascade including training room and directly after) is just blissful compared to modern games. So much interactivity and charm. That's not what linear means anon, and you know it. Halflife is among the most linear series I can think of, there is literally 0 deviation to the possible paths you can take.

linear isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it's nice to have a well designed, handcrafted path instead of just wondering around a vast empty "open world"

I know Call of Duty has sort of given linearity a bad name by dragging you by the nose through it's set pieces, but it can be nice to have a set path to follow without being overwhelmed by meaningless choice.

The standards by which something is deemed adequate does change over time though, in most fields. Entertainment is no different, at least in the context of understanding why gimmicky shit was every popular at all in the past and why now it's seen as nothing more than a retarded fad. The people in relevance to the product have also aged. Half-Life has aged quite well though, for what it's worth. I've run the game through dozens of times and I still give it an occasional playthrough here and there.

The Half-Life mod scene was probably what really made the game. Everyone wanted to play Counter-Strike, and you had to have Half-Life. But who, in those days, bought a game and then didn't play it? So Half-Life did get played and thoroughly enjoyed. It was certainly a different kind of game. Other games had stories, sure, so that wasn't necessarily something new. Some stuff it did differently were "an emphasis on immersion." Doom was great fun, and sure, it could pull you really into the game. It was also clear you were just playing Doom though.

All these mods were simply amazing. Science And Industry was great, but be honest, only a few people even bothered to play it.

I'm 90% sure the biggest three mods were Team Fortress Classic, Counter-Strike, and Natural Selection. They all, as we know, went on to be their own games. NS2 isn't the most played game, unfortunately. It deserves more.

Holy shit. If anyone really thinks that fucking CALL OF DUTY ONE was the most influential game of that time they most likely are missing a few parts of their frontal lobe. If you really think this shit, I guess you have literally never played or looked into Halo 1 at all. Call of Duty One isn't a terrible game, but it was not anywhere near Halo 1, Call of Duty 4 was at least ten times more influential than One.

28 experimental weapons from completely different stages of development most of which were already cut by the time the game leaked. Several of them don't even have working models because they're so old the engine doesn't support them.
