We are in a golden age though, the market is overflowing with brand new ips every day so your spoiled for choice with new games and if you don't like any sites like gog and allow you to play the classics with servers still running. It might not be like the 90s but fps is a lot better than it was in the mid 2000s when call of duty and battlefield were king at least now other companies have a chance of giving of something new instead of that. It might not be as good as it was 20 years ago but its better than it was 10 years ago.

FPS golden age was back when they were trying to introduce new elements into Carmack's engine. i mean like shit they were trying to put spins on FPS games like sneakan, action-RPGan, all sorts of shit. And they were trying out all sorts of settings, too.

FPS stagnation is when everything is boom headshot counterstrike clones. publishers understand keeping the franchise running is the most important thing to keep it the biggest, though, so they'll shit out their cawadoody and battlefield like clockwork every few months so the casual audience won't forget about them. Microsoft didn't understand they should've kept shitting their halo and gears of war shootans out on that timetable and thus nobody gives a shit about halo or gears of war anymore.
