The only reason you think this is because you're going into it with the same mentality as other Sonic games. Back when it was released there was really nothing like it in terms of platformers, and you can tell it was designed with more traditional platformer elements in mind. It wasn't as good as Mario but what was at the time. Still a solid game if you played it with no context back in 1991.

No, not really. There's a stark contrast between Green Hill and the rest of the game. Green Hill is all about exploration and momentum. Then the very next zone, Marble Zone, is mostly linear with little speed sections and very tight platforming (which doesn't work with Sonic's floaty controls). There are some exceptions in the rest of the game, like Spring Yard, but most of the zones keep Marble's design philosophy instead of Green Hill's.

Marble is a slow mess
Spring Yard is pretty alright
Labyrinth is a slightly better Marble
Star Light feels substance-less
Scrap Brain is a nice challenge (but you gotta make sure to use the shortcut in "Act 3" if you don't want to feel like killing yourself)

The middle of the game completely collapses in on itself before it briefly gets its shit back together for Starlight Zone. Then Scrap Brain is honestly pretty okay as final zones go and even has a couple places where you can go fast.

Labyrinth Act 4 is a total slap in the face, though, and the final boss is super underwhelming.

Great first level and intro to the series as a whole. It sets the tone of the game. Overdone, but not bad. 9/10
>Marble Zone
Shows you that the game isn't just about speed, platforming take presenece here. Good music, solid zone. 7/10
>Springyard Zone
The only casino esque zone that's not in your face with gimmicks. Lots of enemies and spike, but not really challenging or notable. 6/10
>Labyrinth Zone
First water level, fun and easy if you learn to keep a study head, drowing isn't really a problem. No water level in Sonic is difficult, learn to get decent at water levels. However, the boss is very hard. Hardest in the game by far. 7/10
>Starlight Zone
Breather level with comfy music and nice visuals. But not much else to it. It's unique because no zone really pays homage to it but lacks anything to really make it notable. 6/10
>Scrapbrain Zone
The point where the game puts you to the test. Hard, but fair. No punches in the gut and less crushing/falling traps than later games, and when there is it telegraphs them so you really can't complain. Better than it's S2 and CD equivilents, though CD's shrinking rays are rad. Despite this, has the easiest final boss in the classic series. 8/10
>Special Stages
Fun, trippy and lightly challenging. Love em, persinally. 9/10

Sonic 1, though lacking the spin dash, was always a great intoduction to Sonic. I think the reason people don't give it credit is that Sonic 2 and CD are largely better retreads of it, with a lot of similar stage themes. S3&K really did well to set itself apart and feel different. Mania is fucking kino, but didn't achieve that due to stages being nearly all retreads.

I liked Sonic up until Labrynth Zone, which is where I started to hate the game.

Worse, Scrap Brain Zone was a awesome level that was ruined by basically giving Labrynth Zone another act for some goddamn reason.

The thing is that Marble doesn't offer speed, even if you're good, you have to push those goddamn block and wait for them to reach the other side. Also all other traps involve waiting with no way around them.

I cut Labyrinth some slack for not offering speed since it offers alternative roads and doesn't force nearly as much waiting.

Honestly never saw what everyone sees in CD. Got that Sonic collection that had it and was immediately disappointed with the first fucking stage and onward. Fuck off, you can get the special stages easily within the first three zones unless you get hit. You will usually end up with 50+ rings by the end of act 1/2 to net the special stage and can do it without needing to use save states.

Sonic 1 did special stage triggers the best. You don't have to break the pace to explore around to get the best ending in the game, you just need to stay the course and not get hit and you will naturally gather the resources you need to trigger the stage and since the stage is always at the end of the level you can just easily jump into it.

What is the proper use of momentum based platforming? You can skip some areas with just speed and platforming without getting hit and not needing to wait for blocks to go across the lava.
