Why does /v/ love this game so much? Is it nostalgia? I just finished it and it was pretty mediocre.
>>
>>388313592
It's always nostalgia.
>>
>>388313592
Cutscenes are still pretty based. Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot were 10/10 villains back when they were just manic weirdos trying to steal a giant robot.
>BROTHER
>there's nothing like the feeling of slamming a long silver bullet into a well greased chamber

Anyone using "nostalgia" as an excuse or argument is instantly not worth even talking to.

No son, the game is simply great, and must've been amazing in 1998.
t: played all of MGS games for the first time 2011-12
>>
>>388313592
It's all about context. This game set the standard for a whole genra that would come after. Also it's 20 years old, settle down. You could have made this exact same post about any major game from the 90s.

Mediocre? Theres nothing like MGS lad.

Just admit you are 15 and can't concentrate anymore and have some Twitch eceleb cunt on in the background.
>>
>>388314671
>>388314857
Any actual arguments? I don't see how it's so great. The stealth and combat mechanics were barebones. The story was fairly good except for how Snake fell in love with Meryl for no reason. The boss fights were good, I'll give it that.

All in all I think it's above average but I see it get so much praise. I can't understand it.
>>
>>388313592
anyone who enjoys anything from before 2010 is purely enjoying it out of nostalgia

you can't understand it because you played it almost 20 years after it's original release.
>>
>>388315750
>I don't see how it's so great.
Great atmosphere, art-style, voice acting (especially for its time), soundtrack, and story. Memorable as fuck cast, and tons of attention to details (just start spamming Codec everywhere, and you'll hear a small Encyclopedia's worth of trivia).
Lot's of replay value thanks to unlockables and VR challenges.

>The stealth and combat mechanics were barebones
For 2017, maybe.
Personally, I prefer this "barebones", videogame-y feel and style.

>except for how Snake fell in love with Meryl for no reason
He didn't. He's just an old stud; it's not the first time he's snatched a girl from his missions. Meryl's no exception, and as you will see later on, it indeed didn't last long either.

>>388315957

Hey, so did I. Didn't stop me from totally loving it.
I did almost hate MGS2 however. Such a clunky ass mess, with the most annoying MC and backup team characters, ever.

>Any actual arguments? I don't see how it's so great.
Then you go to list some pretty big things yourself? You're not the brightest lamp around?

MGS was still unique in late 90s, and stealth genre is still quite niche genre. The production values of MGS however were totally off the charts for its time, and the game still holds up damn well writing and acting-wise. Even the visuals are superb, once you learn to look past the 240p obvious lack of polygons.

I recently played through it to, and while it's nothing amazing, it definitely has a unique charm to it that hooked me. I missed out on the game the first time it released, but if after 20 years of gaming MGS can still feel unique to me, it must have been one hell of a trip to play it back in 98. Shame I know the series rapidly goes to shit starting with 4, but at least I have 2 and 3 to look forward to.

>>
>>388316789
The cutscenes are my major problem. I haven't palyed it yet, but my friend bitches about the mission briefings a lot, apparently there's some dumb story elemnts to that ruin the previous games but he didn't spoil me. I'll probably still give it a shot, but I'm aware most people think 2/3 are the peak of the seris.

The story and ending of MGS2 doesn't matter because MGS4 fixed and/or explained everything that wasn't explained in 2
>>

MGS4 is underrated, you need a certain mindset to play it but it's in no way a bad game. And has some of the greatest parts in the entire series. You should definitely play it.

Context matters. It was something groundbreaking back in '98 and even if new games have surpassed it in graphic technology and gameplay mechanics, it is still a great game and a classic and a trailblazer.
The whole nostalgia buzzword is stupid. By what definition most of the people here use that word the hot new capeshit should be objectively better than old classics such as, say, The Godfather.

Good storytelling.

MGS is better designed than most games today. There are so many ways to tackle the situations you find yourself in and so many downright brilliantly designed moments (like Psycho Mantis) that not being able to appriciate it is the mark of you frankly being a simpleton.

>Speedrunning exploits bugs to complete the game faster, in MGS you just have to skip cutscenes and not be shit.

You need to have perfect knowledge of the game. A game all about discovery and finding out solutions. There were no big arrows to point the way or a questlog telling you precisely what to do and how to do it.

It's not like a first time player would know that during the wolf part if you hit Meryl and hid in the cardboard box the wolves would piss on it and later on you could hide in said box to avoid getting attacked by the wolves.
>>
>>388322782

You're fucking retarded, the game was made for a controller:
>Game was balanced around a controller, aiming included. Mouse aiming makes the game trivial.
>Any mechanics that rely on the pressure-sensitive buttons are outright broken.
>Advanced techniques like running and shooting a gun at the same time rely on specific controller inputs involving the triggers
>Entire series makes use of rumble in innovative ways
>MGS1 outright forces you to plug your controller into the 2nd slot to beat a boss, a really cool and innovated mechanic
>Mashing segments designed for controller buttons

Claiming the series is better with a Mouse & Keyboard just shows how much of a fucking retarded reddit-tier PC kiddie you are.
>>
>>388323254
No, you're just a faggot who can't substantiate your claims. MGS really innovated very little in terms of gameplay. Most of it's stealth mechanics are straight from MG2. And what things it did innovate weren't related to stealth or "setting the groundwork for the genre," like the Psycho Mantis fight.
>>
>>388317101
Snake is better as an NPC at that point. It lets him be a cool mysterious soldier instead of a twit who repeats the last word of everything he's told.

In that same way, Raiden worked for me as the player character. Since I did not give a shit about him, I could just ignore him and focus on playing the game.

In other words, if Twin Snakes is "cool, look what Snake just did"
MGS2 is "cool, look what I just did"

some people are just plebs, such as yourself

I've played plenty of 'classic' video games for the first time as an adult, and plenty are bad, but lots are still just as great playing for the first time now. MGS1 is one of those games, same with OoT.

Metal Gear 1 and 2.

>realtime cutscenes
>in-game camerawork

Super Mario 64.

>leaning around corners
>ui implemtation of menus

System Shock

>knocking to distract or get guards attention

This one is kind of a technicality. Using sound to distract guards was done before in GoldenEye. MGS only "innovated" a very specific form of doing that.

MGS fans are some of the most ignorant people in the world.
>>
>>388324941
Wow, the amount of grasping at straws here is pretty impressive, especially when you ignorantly misinterpret what the things actually mean, like with the UI.
With the UI you accessed your inventory from rolling menus in-game instead of having to go to a seperate screen.

So again, why bother with shitposters only seeking attention? Run along now.

There are too many things to list, but most of them were never seen in another game again and some only in the MGS series.

005 wasn't vision cones you idiot. It was flashlights from when you enter a dark area. Vision cones are very different.

That's what System Shock does too. Hell, that's what early 90s Ultima games did, but System Shock took it to another level.

Not really it was just a graphical effect and it extends forever until it hits a wall. In MGS it is an actual cone and tells you where they will spot you. That actually is a very big difference. In 005 the vision cone is really unnecessary and gives you no new info where as in MGS because it stops short it actually matters.

Maniac Mansion

>That would be Monaco GP
It's just a graphic effect. Nothing about 005 functions like vision cones at all. They take up the width of the sprite and extend until it hits a wall. That isn't a vision cone. You could take away the flashlight effect and lose no information.
>>
>>388326310

Only the main missions are worth completing, and those too up until the point when you kill Skull Face, the game falls apart completely after that, making you rehash old missions to advance that lackluster story. The open world they built is dead and boring too. The phantom pain is thinking about the game we could have got but didn't, bravo Konami.
>>
>>388326310
The only fun i had was when i modded the AI to be into super AI and added more to alerts and more conequences to alerts.
Like the more alerts you did they'd get decked out in super gear you'd get tanks APCs and helicopters patroling all over the place.
Also reduced the time of day speed to real time, that made it a bit more fun.
Too bad its a complete hassle to get it working well and you have to redo it on every start.
But having real time alone makes it more fun.

Basically every choice that was done for MGS5 other than the core is WRONG WRONG WRONG
>>
>>388326597
I was talking about the flashlight effect, not the vision cones you dummy.

Monaco GP does it in a way that has an overlay mask extending out of the car for a few pixels until it stops. Not anything too impressive, but still, lights.
>>
>>388326708
I'd say some of the fault is on Kojima. Konami didn't begin to shit on them until early March 2015 as far as I can find. One year before the game's release. And what we got is the result of an 80 million dollars budget and 4 years of development.
Some fault is on Konami sure but Kojima blew the budget and apparently and didn't took his sweet time making it since he worked on PT and GZ (even if GZ uses assets from TPP it's still more money spent and time away from TPP)
>>
>>388327268
>One year before the game's release.
According to 4chan, 6 months is a year.

What will they discover next? Two plus two equals fish?
>>
>>388327268
>Wasted all the money on retarded music

But he wanted to make something to be on par with GTA5 in the open world, but did he not understand the huge difference in budget between his game and rockstars?
Going open world was a mistake anyway and the game is living proof of it.

the game had great:
story
characters
setting
cultural relevance
cinematic cutscenes
gameplay(for its time)
replayability

The series has always been for people that like scifi meshed epsionage and the first game didnt have anything special stealthwise by todays standards but it made up for it with the above points.

This.
I was an N64 kid myself, but I had friends with PCs and PS1s, so I got to sample many flavors of gaming at young age. MGS1 was one of those big "whoa" experiences of late 90s on the PS, and rightfully became one of the "holy trinity of Sony's flagship titles", alongside with RE2 and FF7.

I had a pleasure of introducing the series to a total newcomer back in 2010, just couple years before the HD Collection shipped, and I can tell you all: these games still work, hit hard, and can leave an everlasting, great impression.
