Debatable. DKCs artstyle is absolutely gorgeous. Notice how the palms get darker because they are closer to the sunset?

The kongs are also capable of many different facial expressions and gestures.

Compared to that Yoshis artstyle is primitive as fuck but probably more cute, I admit that.

One thing helping DKC is the presentation. Not the graphics, mind. But how the game tries to convey everything as an actual WORLD to explore. The stages aren't just blue dots on a map, they correspond to what the map shows: you enter caves when there's a cave on the map, ruins levels only happen when there's a temple... it's a simple thing, but it makes the game feel more immersive. You aren't just going stage to stage-- you're progressing, traveling the island.

All those neat little touches, like the darkness falling at the end of stage 1 from a coming storm, then enduring tropical monsoon in the next stage. Or the approaching blizzard in Snow Barrel Blast that forces the Kongs to seek refuge away from the outside for two stages before it finally dissipates in Ice Age Alley.

You never really get moments like that in Yoshi's Island.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. A long game literally has more replay value. By the time you finish it you already forgot what the earlier levels and mid levels looked like. Platformers are supposed to be long because the length is the only way you can have replay value.

Like I said: replay value. Games like Doom don't have to be long. Just increase the difficulty. Platformers are SUPPOSED to be long.

YI and DKC are definitely not mediocre but are in the 1% percentile of SNES games.

DKC had nothing going for it. It's a pretty bad platformer. Shitty hitbox, horrible secret layout, dumb mini games, looks horrible even back when it came out, not much in level layout.
Yoshi's Island is insanely better and rivals fucking Mario World
