Can't settle on a single idea to run with so I keep looking for excuses not to bother with any of them.

Think of game dev like actually playing games and it becomes a lot easier to do.
If you don't enjoy it as much as playing games then don't bother.

Learning OOP will be good to handle yourself better in a game development environment despite the memes saying OOP is shit (which is only really an issue when you're developing high tier software for analytics and shit)

However there's no chance your game will be any good whatsoever.

got GM:S on the recent humble bundle, and making good progress for not really knowing how to code for serious. The severe lack of in-depth tutorials on how to create menus in GMS is the only thing currently working against me.
>>

oh crap that looks cool. You've made the sprites?
>>
>>388276880
All hand drawn in Aseprite. That program has been a godsend.
>>
>>388276756
Yeah there are many ways to make a menu, just to give you a clue, make a variable that changes its value on a button press, then when you press x button you activate an if cycle that executes whatever action you want to do. The rest is only decoration, though that should be pretty basic (if you can't figure that out you should try to git gud).

My friend and I are trying to get feedback for a game we're almost done with. It's a pretty simple autoscroll game but we're trying to gauge the difficulty before we release on steam. We suspect that it's too hard.

I can do the simplistic stuff, like title menus (options, save/load, new game, quit game, etc) What i'm trying to learn is how to make menus appear aesthetically pleasing.

Working on a semi-idle game that's like a 2d version of Wii's FFCC: My life as a king.

Right now, just trying to figure how to utilize scripting to make things look like those aesthetically pleasing shop menus, not like the shopping list written by a three year old with the shakes that I have now... After that, it's all jelly!

FINALY fucking finished all 90 stages, each one slowly getting harder than the next one
completing one unlocks the next one
completing all 10 unlocks the next world

all saves, stay after you close the game, and completing older stages do not unlock new ones anymore

so its going fine
>>
>>388278625
2nd world because I personally got bored :^) though I guess in the later levels you just put more color switches in faster progression. It would keep me hooked if it was a mobile game (though you probably would have to reduce the amount of colors due to the input).

Looks and feels janky as hell but it's playable. Multiplayer is actually almost up to par with single player now. Soon: more leveling content, a dungeon.
>>
>>388279770
that's the point

it's a thunderstorm hazard that shows up in later levels. it's not typically that dark.
>>
>>388279453
Yeah now that i look at it that does look difficult, but only because you're overwhelming the player with mechanics, not that i would reject the challenge (you'd attract a pretty niche userbase) but keep in mind that the human brain can at most keep track of 6 things at a time so maybe you should reduce the amount of colors a bit. Also, make the panels brighter in that level so the players don't struggle trying to see the stage too.

But 'best engine' all depends on what you're looking for.

LÖVE if you want to actually learn programming practices that will help you later (even with Lua being as simple as it is)
GameMaker if all you care about is making a playable game and nothing beyond that

Unity lets you use Unityscript, which has the same syntax as java, and it's fine for 2d games as well.
As far as 2d games go, I'd say what you can do with either Unity or Game Maker is probably about the same.
Just pick one and stick with it, engine choice really isn't that important if you're just getting into things.

GML is as awful as javascript as a teaching language, with even fewer good parts.
eg, Javascript's actually amazing handling of functions doesn't even kind of exist, GML doesn't even have proper functions -- although I'm still stuck using GMS1 since I can't be arsed to go buy GMS2 when I tried it out during the beta and the UI was a hideous fucking pile of ass
you can still just accidentially ruin everything (eg, I once had a horrible set of bugs in a game because my loop counter ended up having object scope, so it'd get clobbered constantly, and it took me ages to realize because the thing mostly worked except when it broke miserably)

Think harvest moon and you are a witch/warlock growing magical crops. Plan on having lots of atypical crops like things that will eat you and require flesh for food or have special needs. Like how Mandrakes can kill you if you harvest them incorrectly.
