>I was left alone, riding the weaponized luxury liner into the heart of a Combine world. An immense light blazed. I caught a cosmic view of a brilliantly glittering Dyson sphere. The vastness of the Combine’s power, the futility of our struggle, blossomed briefly in my awareness. I saw everything. Mainly I saw how the Borealis, our most powerful weapon, would register as less than a fizzling matchhead as it blew itself apart. And what remained of me would be even less than that.

Fuck...
>>
>>388247251
how was that ship supposed to destroy that massive sphere?
>>
>>388247761
it wasn't
>>
>>388247761
It wasn't... that's the point. Humanity never stood a chance. Gman wanted Freeman to destroy the ship because it was too close to his employers toys. Only they get to fuck around with time and space. He steps into his door and goes back to more important things.

It's a fantastic ending and would have been a sucker punch to the player.

check the reviews on Valve's games. They're getting hammered.

I think this is what they feared. The old fanbase deciding they're sick of being pushed aside while a newer demographic is being catered to for profit.
>>

to be fair, i'd use lights of the seven for the entirety of the sequence: from when gordon sees the sphere for the first time to his rescue thanks to the vortigaunts. that crescendo is too perfect

Irrelevant. Nobody would stop playing Dota 2 or CSGO for this. It may affect Artifact, but Artifact is more likely a passion project of a bored team of programmers than real deal.

Valve is pathetic at PR. So they will ignore this because Valve has no backbone. Not entitled bte, valve could have handled this better 10 years ago. They left the door opened and lied instead of admitting nothing was happening and it was dead. Fuck Valve for having no honor.

No soundtrack at all.

Let there be silence aside from the Borealis shuttering around Gordon, as if to show its own, immobilizing fear.

As the Borealis gets closer, a faint roar can be heard from the sun along with very quiet but distinct bass-like clangs of metal from the dyson sphere. The clangs have a rhythm that get louder as the sun begins to blot out Gordons visions, the roar as load as possible, the Borealis shuttering and creaking madly.

Then silence and blinding white light.

Freeman and Alyx thought that the Combine have one homeworld and they hoped the Borealis explosion (some timespace-portal-nuclear explosion) would have such power to destroy/heavily damage this homeworld. While in reality the Combine inhabited a whole solar system and had a dyson sphere there. So the Borealis explosion could have destroyed a chunk of a sphere the size of a planet. But ultimately it meant nothing. Compared to the size of a dyson sphere, it is literally nothing.

Laidlaw wrote HL1 and 2. Now he is gone and had clearly enough of the faggotdom at Valve to such an extend that he couldn't keep the rest of the plot of HL a secret anymore. It was obviously close to his heart, otherwise he wouldn't have posted it. He just wanted closure just like everyone of us, unlike that fat maggot judenschwein jewpig billionaire.
If that lardass jewpig Gaben ever decides to make HL3, he will hire a bunch of nu-male Redditor cucks to write epic ftw xD maymays for the job, as he has done for the past 10 years with everything Valve has shat out since then.

The Sun's output is 3.8 x 1033 ergs/second, or about 5 x 1023 horsepower. How much is that? It is enough energy to melt a bridge of ice 2 miles wide, 1 mile thick, and extending the entire way from the Earth to the Sun, in one second.

>He beat the Xen
He killed an escaped super-psychic slave that was indeed holding the portal disturbances open to Earth, but simultaneously the only thing keeping the Combine from knowing about the Resonance Cascade on Earth to begin with. By killing the Nihilanth and fucking over the makeshift slaves and their hastily-constructed forces that were taking refuge in Xen, Gordon Freeman assured the defeat of humanity at the hands of the Combine.

The entire series has been about little more than playing to the tune of those greater powers manipulating and stringing you along with little idea of what to do than survive.

The fractured, tiny remains of a long conquered planet. Most of who dont even know of the dyson sphere and surrounding empires existance, let alone reaching it or damaging it, struggling for what they once thought was just their planet. But He finds out that it's against a massive, interstellar legion, powerful enough to turn a larger star than ours into an engine.

He's not giving up, he's accepting.
Accepting that he's never been in control, he's only been pulled along by some higher power. Not some benevolent god, but a strange man in a suit with powers far beyond what Gordon can see.
Accepting that this last chance, this last minute ace in the hole, has accomplished nothing.
Accepting that he can do nothing to stop the combine.
Accepting that he has lost everything; Lost his world, his race, his fight, his benefactor. Lost even Alyx in the end.

He has accepted the end.

Even if the Combine ultimately disassociated themselves from Earth and left it alone, the world still has Xen wildlife and refugees, and the Vortigaunts still roam while the Earth had an unknown amount of time to lick its wounds. In the end they'd of been free to take Half-Life 3 in many directions, from attempting to continue the fight against the Combine to going back down-to-Earth (no pun intended) and going a different route.
>>
>>388255650

After the destruction of the Citadel there were still a fuck ton of Combine forces everywhere that the Resistance would have to mop up.

The plot of Half Life 3 would have had to center on some giant looming threat, though, so who knows. I doubt it.

>>
>>388254003
Because the Combine aren't some evil empire with an evil overlord to topple at the end of your quest. They're a government, a society, a civilization so advanced that they effortlessly control entire universes.

Earth is the equivalent of some occupied third-world shithole to them. The head officials of the Combine government probably don't even know what the hell Earth is. The armies Gordon fought aren't even a fraction of their might. Those were the fucking grunts, the equivalent of the Combine Coast Guard. Nothing Gordon or the entirety of humanity has ever done in the span of the Half-Life games will even show up in the average Mr. Joe Slugman's morning paper on the Combine homeworld. Earth is probably below some fucking alien soap opera in terms of how prioritized by anyone it is. Gordon is nothing.

There's nothing he can do. There's nothing anyone can do. You can't win against something that doesn't even know you exist.
>>
>>388256601

>despite having the resources they do jack shit to advance their own goals for years and years until some meddler blows up their portal to Earth and the device they were searching for

Yeah, if you wanted me to despair at the might of the Combine and the utter insignificance of humanity in the face of their eternal empire, this was not the way to do it. They just come across as incompetent, wasteful retards now.

Most of the combine forces on Earth are actual humans after whatever modification their automatic surgery makes and the vehicles like striders and dropships are heavily implied to be cybernized creatures from other planets of the combine empire. Since everyone can be a slug there's also a chance that they are not combines either. Maybe there are no combines. Maybe Combines are truly multiracial government with heavy hierarchy. Spoilers ahead
>Earth has been hit by an asteroid
>All you know is that nothing on the surface survived
>There was a colony at the bottom of the ocean that survived but they got involved with a cult and after uploading their consciousness they ended their own lives because they're stupid enough to think it would actually transport their consciousness that exists in their brain with it
>The people who did survive and didn't fall for the cult meme became victim to a violent AI obsessed with preserving life by erasing what makes people human through a nanomechanical cancerous infection
>You meet various AI throughout who have no idea how bad things are
>One of them is stranded on the ocean floor completely alone thinking it's in the AI paradise but it's uploaded to a single-unit hardware platform, leaving you with the option to pull its plug and if you do it lets out a heart-wrenching agonizing condemnation and scream like if you just tore her lungs out
>Even the marine life is compromised, so the only way you can preserve any kind of meaningful organic life on earth is by eliminating the AI, the only thing left that is capable of any strata of sentient thought
>You meet the last uncompromised human, who is on life support and watch her ramble away her last few moments before a natural death
>There's a room with pictures from the surface and it is truly a hellscape littered with bones and dust
>Knew you were a robot from the beginning, but had to watch your new robot consciousness die so you could start a new one that isn't you
>Send the platform into space knowing it'll only be up there for a thousand years before it's inoperable
>All those fake consciousnesses created just to live out a finite existence with no hope for a future in their artificial world or on the real Earth
>Ends with your idiot MC sperging out about the same things the cultists were and pissing off the only friend you had, leaving you completely alone on a dead planet

At least several enslaved worlds + solar system with dyson sphere. "Several" are most likely several thousands, if not millions or even billions, considering they don't really "occupy" the Earth with their own forces, but use Earth citizens to occupy themselves. They probably do this just because of how immense their empire is, so they try to cut down costs on actual troops as much as possible, while trying to rectuit locals to police themselves. The solar system with a dyson sphere is questionable though, it can be 1 or it can be many. Even with the one system, they can have billions of rotating habitats living off solar energy, so they outnumber a planet with Earth like population billions to one, probably even more, at that's the least of estimates.

Could you imagine having a level designed around non-euclidean geometry and temporal effects. The puzzles could have been insane and while people would question whether it was physically possible, I'd like to point out that it's something that modders experimented with on source engine using the code for portals and rendering projections back in 2011.

Gordon Freeman also shares half of his name with the man that coined the concept of the Dyson Sphere: Freeman Dyson, who happens to be a physicist and mathematician. One of Freeman's concept names was even Dyson Pointcare.

To humanity, the Freeman was the one free man, the opener of the way. But in reality, he was just a facet of the future, synonymous with the sheer power of the Combine and the hopelessness of the human race as but a molecular speck in comparison.

So Steam is the Dyson Sphere right?
>>
>>388257696
That's not too impossible to do. Dyson sphere's have more people, industrial capacity and power than an entire galaxy's worth of earth civilisations.

However, that much power also lets you do some interesting things. Assuming the dyson sphere has the ability to make kugelblitz's (black holes made from light), it would be possible to destroy this thing completely by destroying the star at the core.

The combine is an interdimensional empire, not an interplanetary one. It expands by conquering alternate universe versions of itself. Destroy the solar system's center star in the original universe and the empire is shattered.

Explain to me what was so bad about the Combine.
They enslaved humanity? So what, most people are fucking cunts.
If you actually joined them, you gained immense benefits - cybernetic augmentations for the soldiers, and for the intellectual leaders (like Breen) a chance to discover new worlds, new dimensions and new knowledge.
Who really cares if Earth is enslaved, if you get to join the ranks of the slavers?

Speak for yourself. If you had a clone, would you just jump in a meat grinder because there's another you?

MC had the world to himself, Catherine and any other AI they wanted for company. It didn't stop him before, and he's a prime candidate for life on land, so why not make the most of it?

I used to have an existentialist friend who was like that... "W-Well why should I do anything if I'm going to die one day?" citing how small we are in the universe. We're more valuable than anything else in the universe, though, because we are the only things in the universe that can comprehend our surroundings and ponder stupid questions like "Wh-Why?" We are the brain of the universe. The only glittering speck that gives any of it value, because brown dwarfs and supermassive black holes are just matter and energy driven by nothing but their surroundings. It's true, we're at their mercy. They're great, and we're small. But without us, they're not great. Without the human phenomenon of comparison, they just "are."

Something large and vast still has weaknesses. Supply lines, resources, energy. Maybe taking out the dyson sphere severely energy depletes them and they fall just from that. If there's one problem I have, it's that fans perceive the Dyson Sphere using google images. Remember that these are the same assholes that dropped Citadel superstructures into the capitals and major cities across the globe to wipe out our armies from the inside-out, and have walls spanning fast reaches of land that gradually close in on themselves, likely sucking out nutrients from the planet slowly but surely and leaving behind nothing but rubble, destruction and wastelands.

The mere idea of a Combine Dyson Sphere is something no random piece of art can really do justice to, given how strange and assimilatory their technology was. I wouldn't be surprised if they just funneled resources into something that basically expanded on its own without the need for excess input.

One man isn't going to do dick to something that size, no matter where he is or what he does. That's the point of the ending: the single most devastating device the human race had ever constructed was a scratch, at worst.

Laidlaw is an asshole for publishing this. Major disrespect to Valve after everything they've done for him. Without Valve, nobody would know who the fuck he is. He'd be writing shitty pulp novels for pennies without them. I know he's taken action to avoid lawsuits but I hope Valve does something to repay him the favor of backstabbing them like this.
Also I don't see how anyone is happy seeing the ending in this form instead of what could've been if Laidlaw didn't blow his load so quickly

The Combine have one-way teleportation, and the races inhabiting Xen were on the run from the Combine as former slaves. Son, they were called the combine because they took everything we had and incorporated the best parts into themselves and their technology. EVERYTHING. Destroying earth was just sifting the pan for one gem. Maybe it was some awesome technology humans made first, like the crazy shit at aperture science. But it could have just as easily been some part of our genetic code that made us grow bitching kidneys, and they needed kidneys.

You're right, they didn't need anything from earth. But just maybe, earth had something they wanted. And that was enough reason to wreck its shit.

I don't understand how anyone could call this closure though. Gman taking Alyx? Gordon discovering the futility of the resistance AND getting saved? Its almost a perfect set up for a Half-Life 4, not some peaceful ending.

If we take this ending for granted, it seems like his goal the entire series was to destroy the Borealis, and prevent humankind from obtaining it, perhaps potentially as a weapon or tool which would elevate them to or past the Combine's level.

Essentially, humanity would be holding a multidimensional trump card if they kept the Borealis. Not as a transdimensional impact weapon, but as a tool through which a greater understanding of multidimensional travel becomes available to us.

Considering that the G-Man is the only character in the series that seems to show a complete and instant mastery over space and time, maybe he either saw this potential power as a threat to himself, or more likely, his 'benefactors'.

Alyx sets it to self destruct so it would blow up before the Combine knew it was even there.

And on top of that the Dyson Sphere dwarfs the Borealis so much the Combine wouldn't even notice it when it blows up.

>Pretty much has to be if they want to build a Dyson sphere,

The reason a dyson sphere is considered a plausible thing to look for is because it is actually easier to make than it is to spread out to other habitable planets. Space is rather big, and without ftl, the idea of forge worlds and garden worlds is ridiculous. It's stupid even if you do have FTL, because a dyson sphere lets everything be in one solar system for unparalleled industrial capacity. Sure, a type 2 civilisation could easily afford to make generation ships and send them off into the void, but you seriously have to say bye bye to whoever is on board when there is no FTL. Those people are going to another solar system and they aren't coming back.

You can. A nearby supernova star could do it.

Furthermore, the reply chain you've entered brings up the possibility of doing it by creating a kugelblitz black hole and dumping it into the star at the center. This would destroy the star violently, and the surrounding sphere would be deprived of its energy source, if not destroyed.

Honestly though Laidlaw wrote out a way for humanity to eventually win on his @breenslug account. The original Combine Advisors were conquered by essentially using a computer virus, instead of cybernetics like most of their enslaved races, and it's mentioned that a small group of surviving larvae had escaped the Combine's reach and were researching a way to create a sort of counter-virus to reverse the effects. If all or most of the Combine's low/medium level overlords were suddenly to lose their programmed loyalty then it'd probably be catastrophic, no matter how many galaxies the Combine controls.

Star lifting. It's where you use solar arrays to blow off and capture solar wind with magnetic fields. It enables mining of vast, vast, I say vast amounts of matter. And once you have one ring, you have more than enough industrial capacity to make another, and another, until the whole star is surrounded.

However, "rings" of that scale are not stable and require materials that probably don't exist. It's more realistic to think of a dyson sphere as a dyson swarm. Lots of orbital arrays, each as big as a city. So many that they effectively block out all the light from a star.

Christ this is just terrible. I would rather have the game never be made than have it randomly pop up with David Bowie at the end. I'd probably laugh at what is supposed to be a somber moment.

would take a long ass time except near light speed, except at those speeds you'd need a powerful magnetic field around it because hitting a single atom at those speeds can cause immense damage.
Maybe if they broke it up into pieces but it seems like the energy needed to get it there might be more than the star it was originally around depending on it's mass

The resistance found a (human, ocean) ship that exists throughout time and space at once, Judith wants to study the tech and Alyx wants to crash it into the Combine homeworld. Alyx ends up shooting Judith and trying to do so, but when they get there they're met with the sight of a dyson sphere and realise they're screwed. The Gman nabs Alyx, leaving Gordon on the ship alone until the Vortigaunts rescue him right as the ship impacts.

They have to be black civilizations too

Anyone make an SFM video of this ending yet? YouTube (and Valve's community in general) is usually quick to react

>somehow a small team of dedicated people that went to get source images to create an HD project for one game can do and finish an entire project for all of RE4 before HL fans can ever consolidate together to do anything similar whatsoever for Half-Life, Black Mesa not withstanding

holy shit, you are literally acting like a fucking Youtube Recommedations algorithm. How is it like: to live your life like a complete fucking drone? Why the everloving fuck would you need a precedent to make a creative decision?

Did programmers ask themselves, whether or not there were physics puzzles in a first game or vehicles, or Big Brother reference before adding all of it to a second one?

Good God, you people need to stop taking things in your lives so seriously - I'm serious right now

>espite having the resources they do jack shit to advance their own goals for years and years until some meddler blows up their portal to Earth and the device they were searching for
you forget one thing

The combine are at WAR with G-man species, species that actually have Time and Space travel, you dungus, it's supposed that they focus their resources in the war, not in a small little ass planet that may or not may have something related to portals.

what's wrong with "laughing"? It's a good mechanism for coping with absurdity and misery of some moments of your life (there's nothing more absurd than an entire star covered in metal and more miserable than end of everything you loved and lived for... i mean that's what the writing suggests when he sees the inevitability of human race's ultimate demise, right?)

we dont know that they are at war with the G Man species

THIS
half life 3 would have been hella epic with some cool references and pop songs, maybe one final snappy one liner from freeman before the credits roll and of course a post-credits easter egg just like my marvel flicks

Gordon is the most useless protagonist ever. Nothing he did even matters.
