What was the last game with mechanics that you had never seen before?
What was the last game that astonished you?
Okami.

I'm mostly a retro gamer because no money and old pc. So when I first played Skyrim (some weeks ago), I was astonished by the details of guards bothering you because shouting or dropping junk in the city, or people acnowledging things you did in the past. The game was really bad and boring, but those things really imppresed me.

wow painting how fucking original
>>388237774
Breath of the Wild
>>388240643
The painting mechanic isn't what wowed me about that game.
>>388237774
Gravity Rush
>>388237774
Shadow of War impressed me with how brutal the executions are. We've all seen executions, but they just seem way more aggressive and act like the Uruks have meat and bones instead of the sword being a unstoppable lightsaber.
Exanima. Never played anything that handles combat like that before.
Killing Floor 2 maybe?
Not really a gameplay mechanic but that's the first game I can recall where blood(decals) stay on the walls/etc. the entire match.
>>388237774
Space Engine if that counts as a video game. It's more of a sim than a game but it's fucking breathtaking.

Name 32 games

>tf2 with better graphics but somehow worse gameplay
WOOOOOW
Legitimately Code of Princess. I never played Guardian Heroes, only found out about it after I played the game.
I really liked the 3-plane system for a beat em up, other beat em ups sometimes have weird problems with collision due to the way movement works, but with the way the movement works in CoP you have three linear planes you can switch between for combat. I thought it was pretty decent, if a bit bare bones.
This. But it's the fourth one in the series, so the other 3 probably did some of it already.
Hellblade's incredible audio and spoopy voices I guess
inb4 not a game, walking sim etc etc

Mount & Blade : Warband.
Probably Copy Kitty or Magicka for indie games.
Games that have mixable abilities to create new ones always feel so intuitive to me and can make the game much more expressive than games that are like "you are X character with X few abilities".
Copy Kitty is a severely underrated indie game that is basically what Mighty #9 should have been.
In terms of games that haven't had mechanics really topped or done well anywhere else again, Portal. Just the execution for the concept was flawless and even worked inside HL2 if you merged the files.
>>388240694
Unironically this.
Runner ups: Braid's time control, Super Mario Galaxy gravitation engine, Portal, first Telltale game played
>>388246556
telltale games are regressive though not progressive
>>388246684
yeah, now i know that, but first time i was amzed but the amount of paths

Splatoon.
>>388241973
Name a game.
>>388247938
This.
Splatoon is genuinely a tiny revolution in the genre. It managed to map taking cover, reloading and running all to the same button.
I know this is going to sound incredibly stupid but bloodborne was the last game to really suprise me, I hadn't been challanged by a game in years until it came out and the hach and slash mechanics felt unique and tight, the world was amazing and the lovecraftian vibe was unique.
Love that game.
>>388237774
Witcher 3, the best game ever made.
It's probably been done before but having walls be destructible in rainbow six siege was an eye opener for me
despite its flaws Life is Strange's time rewind mechanic in its context was cool
>>388252675
Play ghost trick
>>388237774
Titanfall 2's time travel level gave my willy a wee tingle
Killer7, that game is like no other
Not the last time, but it won't be mentioned otherwise...
>Red Faction
>tunneling around locked doors by digging through terrain
>Red Faction Guerilla
>taking down massive buildings with carefully placed explosives
Shame about Armageddon killing the series.
>>388252850
>it's a /v/ recommends me weeb game episode
Bad Company 2 blew me away when I first played it. Being able to level entire walls and buildings in a match, the sound design, losing hearing from close explosions, etc. I was fucking amazed. Some of the best multiplayer I've ever played
>>388241481
Update when
>>388253436
Ghost Trick isn't even weeb dummy, it's a legitimately good game and if you enjoyed Life is Ass you'd like it. Don't act like a twat just because people want to recommend you a game to play
>>388253436
>weeb game
Neo-/v/, ladies and gentlemen.
>>388237774
>What was the last game with mechanics that you had never seen before?
Dunno.
>>388237774
>What was the last game that astonished you?
Dead Space 2?
>>388237774Undertale
Yeah sorry, but it's extremely clever at times how it plays with the bullet-hell genre
>>388254904
Honestly I thought the most enjoyable part of the game was avoiding attacks in the little bullet-hell sections. It makes the battles more interesting than other turn-based RPG's for me. I just wish that it were harder.
