Remember to remove the time capacitor on these things. my original xbox just died because i was too lazy to remove it.
>>
Bumping. It's a super easy fix: just open it up, twist the fucker off and wipe up the acid.
>>
what the fuck are you talking about friend
>>
>>388226371
But I have a 1.6. Aren't I already safe?
>>
>>388226892
Xboxes from about 2001 to 2003 (revisions 1.0 to 1.5) contain a really shitty capacitor that inevitably breaks, leaking acid everywhere and corroding the motherboard. You can remove it, breaking the RTC but saving the console.
>>
That's just an old wives' tale.
>>
When I opened my xbox up, the capacitor had just begun to show signs of corrosion, but luckily it hadn't leaked onto the mobo yet. Just snip it off with some pliers, lads.
>>
>>388227046
nah mine was 1.6 to (i think it was, the manufacture date was '04). all original xboxs are ticking time bombs. the only difference is that people who have 1.6 are even more fucked because the xbox wont function without the capacitor.

Will this time capacitor allow me to do that?

For those unaware, capacitors can hold charge for an extremely long amount of time. They can also discharge extremely quickly.

Pretty sure they used cmos batteries rather than a capacitor for the clock.

Not that I know. The only other console with bad caps I've heard of was PC Engine.

>>
>>388226371
Bought a second hand one recently and upgraded to a 80gb HDD, then noticed the clock never worked. Guess I'm safe then.
>>
My cap had leaked a little but did no damage and was easily cleaned up. My Xbox still works ok. 1st model Xbox too. It is no myth. That cap WILL leak not a matter of IF but WHEN and how much.

The only issue I got with my original first model Xbox is that sometimes it needs a few attempts to boot up. (I assume its a PSU issue of some kind) But once it gets going it works until I unplug it.

Keep the original drive somewhere hidden and safe and make some clones too. An old 80gb IDE lying around will do the trick. Get unleashed X on it.
>>
>>388227046
>>388227304
1.6's have quality clock caps which shouldn't fail like mad, but still will before your average cap. The fact that the cap needs replacing when it's really 100% useless coupled with a few games not running right, make 1.6 the worst model. Unless you're in it for a fancy case, like a Crystal or Halo Xbox
>>
>>388237101
Another console with an annoying quirk is the Dreamcast.
If it gets into a reset boot loop its likely the damn pins near the front have been misaligned over time from heat distortion.
Putting them back in place sorts it for a good while though.
>>
>>388237427
I just had to do this with my Dreamcast, it's working like a charm for now, I also had to tweak the laser pot
>>
>>388230679
Are the security seals on the bottom damaged? If not, then your clock cap spewed acid all over your board over 4-5 years ago and has slowly been eating away at it
>>
>>388228023
Wouldn't removing pieces from it just destroy the thing? Sorry if the question's dumb, but I'm completely illiterate when it comes to this.
>>
>>388237728
This piece is non-essential. It's like a battery that keeps the internal clock ticking when you remove the AC cord.
Except this battery spews acid everywhere, so you better remove it.

Knew about this like 6 months ago but finally got around to removing it.

I'm mad I waited so long because it was much easier than it seemed. My Xbox still runs after I put it all back together so I'm happy. The area surrounding the capacitor looked like it had a stain around it, I'm guessing that was the electrolytic fluid? I swabbed at it real good with rubbing alcohol.
>>
>found an xbox that was nearly unplayed, still in the box with all the manuals and plastic at a garage sale
>I don't want to fuck up the stickers to remove the capacitor because it's just so pristine

How do I save it without messing it up? (it's not a 1.6)
>>
>>388237794
>This piece is non-essential. It's like a battery that keeps the internal clock ticking when you remove the AC cord.

Also, when the cap is working normally it only hold a charge for like a week or some shit. So it's just there for the convenience of not setting the clock when you move to a new apartment.
>>
>>388237983
The Xbox is a really nice console to get into. It's so big that everything is just conveniently laid out.
The Dreamcast is also practical to open up and service as well, which is impressive for how compact it is. Sony consoles are hell though.
>>

My preferred method to cleanly open it up is to take a sharp knife and cut a X into the 2 stickers you need punch through. The flaps of the X will get pushed in when you run the screw back in and it'll look neat and tidy.

My xbox is weird. It says 2004-08-23 which would make it 1.6 but I just checked and it seems like the previous owner has opened it up. The seal is broken and the screw is visible. When I unplug it from the outlet then reboot the system it always asks me to reset the time. If its always plugged in it keeps the time. Is that normal? Or did the previous guy tinker with it?
>>
>>388238649

Is he? Source?

>>388238693

Normal. Both of my Xboxs do this. It probably means the batteries are going to blow and kill them at any time.

Literally got it the first day it was out, but apparently it's got some fucked up motherboard with the nor chip in a weird place that's hardly documented anywhere. Had to twist the clip around a funny way to get it to work. Couldn't even close the thing properly when I was done.

>>388238839

I haven't opened my slim, but I imagine it's still probably less fucked than a fat.

That said, I've had it for 5 years when I bought it new, so it's probably well past the due date for a cleaning. I'm just fucking lazy about learning a new assembly.

There is no "safe" unless you have personally removed it (or if you have a 1.6)
>>
>>388238693
That's early enough that may not be a 1.6, the date is just a general indicator. All 2004's are YMMV. If you're already soft modded you can just boot up XBMC and it should tell you what version you're on
>>
>>388239204

For now.

If you unplug your Xbox, and then plug it back in and you have to reset your clock, it means it's now a timebomb.

Granted, mine has been a timebomb for 5 years now and is still running fine otherwise, so I have no idea how likely it is to kill your Xbox in the short term.
>>
What does the electrolytic fluid look like? And does vinegar work as well as rubbing alc?

Friendly reminder that it's not just the time capacitor that can kill your Xbox but also the disc drive. If the disc drive dies you're fucked because the system refuses to boot up if it's not working.
The only solution is to hack your Xbox, replace your hard drive with a larger capacity drive, set up a FTP to your PC to load your games and shit on the console and NEVER EVER USE THE DISC DRIVE AFTER THAT.

>>388237728
A lot of manufacturers of electronics cheap-out and use crappy capacitors. I'm not sure if this capacitor is really used to by the Xbox's real-tie clock but, even if it weren't, a person could at least replace the low-quality capacitors with good quality ones from Nichicon, Ruby, or Panasonic.
>>
>>388246821
It's leaking, so it's obviously not a 1.6. Remove that thing unless you want your Xbox to die.
>>

It's possible you have a 1.6 but as an anon mentioned earlier, it's YMMV. You can soft mod your console with XBMC and find out your version that way.

>>
>>388247193

>>
>>388247193
No because the xbox one doesn't have xbox backwards compatibility yet, and when it does it won't be all games, and that's even hoping it doesn't have emulation like the 360 did, which was garbage.
>>
>>388246874

>>
>>388246886
Nothing. You have a 99.9% chance of having a 1.6. It should be fine. If the cap ever fails though you'll need to replace it, and the cap isn't exactly common. But they are available, I think replacements cost like $10 or something
