Why are there so few drill sergeants in video games?
Why do they in video games sound non-threatening, fake and like they're doing a bad impression of Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann from Full Metal Jacket?
>>
johnson is more apone from aliens
>>
Because you have to actually be there.

They get about 3 or 4 hours of sleep and are still balls to the wall. You don't have to worry about inspections, marching, drills,PT,tests etc.

No game could simulate having a God damn chair thrown at me in Great Lakes.

Discipline. A soldier exists to complete orders from his superiors as quickly and efficiently and possible. Also builds up resistance to fatigue in ability to act in stressful conditions.
Also it builds a sense of camaraderie among the soldiers, since if someone fucks up everyone gets punished.

>Why demotivate and shit on people who willingly joined the army to protect their country?

It's to make you into a disciplined and team oriented individual. If you think you should get golden blowjobs for signing up to join the military and get all butthurt all of a sudden when a scary black guy with a funny hat calls you names, you should reconsider why you signed up.

If you can't handle being called a fuckface when you make a mistake, you won't be able to handle bullets whizzing by you or the stress of military life, let alone a PT run.

That being said, it's in my opinion that striking recruits/privates in bootcamp is counterproductive and there are more effective ways to correct one's behavior that does not involve hitting them. At the same time, I think you shouldn't cry when you get gutpunched for sleeping on fire watch.

Not being able to zero your rifle shouldn't result in a PT smoking session and yelling until you get it right but unfortunately, this is a reality.

>Is this by design or are those drill guys just assholes that nobody can do anything about?

It's suppose to be stressful by design. You are being groomed to react a certain way under extreme stress, but civilian oversight of the Army is trying to break that design.

As the Army continues to get more soft on how new recruits can be treated, the quality of new privates we receive drops.

New privates do things I would have never dreamed of doing when I was a private, talking back to team leaders, squad leaders and platoon sergeants, not saluting officers, standing around playing on their phones when there is work to be done.

When I was in ((european)) Police Academy, the first 4 months were a hell time, more cardio than an Ethiopian could survive with the instructors telling you every moment, especially at your weakest with your face on the ground that you are not Police material and that nobody wants you there and that you should quit.

The goal is to only keep those who actually want to be there and don't quit.

You do a lot of dumb shit that won't really make sense to you until later in your career, and then you will do a lot of dumb shit that will never make sense ever.

When we did our STXs one of our drill sergeants blew up a rattlesnake with an M80, then he made us all strip into our underwear, paint our bodies with warpaint and do an Indian rain dance for 9 hours around the carcass because the ammo guys fucked up and we didn't have any ammo for the first day. 6 people passed out because it was 105 fucking degrees out in south Georgia humidity.

tiring punishment = punishment but they can still respect you and your rank

When I was in boot for the Army we had a guy who had pissed off just about everyone in our platoon to the point a bunch of dudes wrote this completely faggy letter complaining about him to our drills.

To settle it our drills had us toe the line and take turns volunteering to fight him. He lost to the first couple guys and then after that was too tired to put up a decent fight and was just taking rear naked chokes and guillotines left and right.

At one point he stood up a a bit too angrily and bumped into one of the drills. Drill got angry enough at that he grabbed him by the collar and slammed him up against the nearest lockers. It was awkward to watch.

The infantry is like a fraternity. It can get pretty silly when it's just a bunch of 18-25 year old men stuck together for months.

Women being allowed in now is probably going to put a stop to all sorts of shenanigans like that. The days of kidnapping people in other platoons during the night and leaving them tied up somewhere, bare-knuckle boxing in the killzone, shitting in other trainee's rucks while they are pulling security, burying people in their hasty fighting positions while they sleep and other general fuckery are over.

>Feels to me that it would only make everyone fucking hate the guy who fucks up/keeps fucking up

Eh, I hated a lot of the people in my platoon anyway. When you go for a shit like infantry or similar you have to accept that most of the people with you are going to be retarded.
>>
>>388230106
Basically you shove the fattest guy you can into the locker of the person who comes out of the shower last, he's naked and stuffed in there, and when the guy rushes in to open his locker (because he's probably going to be late for something), the fat guys ass is there in his face and he takes a massive dump on the floor and everyone laughs
>>
>>388230092

It usually works though. Everyone gets together and squares the fuck up away themselves so they all stop getting fucked up. If it happens to be a case where it just doesn't work, the recruit gets recycled into another group, sent home, or they hang themselves in the bathroom and the problem fixes itself anyway.

It happens pretty much every training cycle. The military has it down to a fine science.

Looking back at it, that was really bizarre. He was one of the few drill sergeants without combat ptsd too, he was just wierd
>>
>>388230092
That guy has to fucking realize he's not on his own anymore, he's part of a bigger entity and his fuckups could potentially screw the whole group just because of him, So this works to make him realize he cant just make excuses and try even fucking harder to reach everyone's else's level.
When you're in that situation, what you need are RESULTS, not attempts.
You cant have any fucking mistake in a warzone, like installing a device as a defensive measure and forget to turn it on, it gets you killed

For you and all the other vets that get the handshake and "thank you for your service" crap, I had a major that solved it: what you do is, you shake their hand back even more earnestly and say "thank you for your support", then look at them like you're expecting a reply.

On a more serious notr, it doesn't matter if you've actually served in combat or any of that shit. You volunteered to do it if you were called on to do it, and if you did your job well, you contributed to unit readiness in case of whatever situation. So you did a valuable service to the country regardless.

>What do you actually do in boot camp/basic?

Basic covers, well, the basics. Rifle training and qualification is the biggest thing early on. You also learn orienteering, proper radio usage, all that kind of shit.

Training followed a phase system based on colors. Every time we went up a color, based on how long we'd training and if we hadn't fucked up, we'd get extra privileges. For example, we weren't allowed to eat any desserts or drink anything other than water at chow until we'd hit something like the third phase.

You get trained to be a well disciplined member of the military, you get yelled at a lot and have to do a lot of PT, good for you, good for me. It's usually two to three months depending on what branch you fo into, theres various phases of training that teach you the basics, weapons training, drill practice, military procedures, usually separated by weeks of training

I went in about 8 years ago and we were still training in basic with M16s. I think the ones we had with us most of the were missing a firing pin or something, but the ones we went out shooting with were shitty Vietnam era M16s.

I think most real world operations use M4s nowadays. I know our local armory had a bunch, but I never got to fire one.

In basic training for all branches you learn pretty much the same exact things. It's all about repetition and attention to detail, you learn basic skills like shooting and marching, cleaning equipment, and maintaining your fitness. Most basic training cycles are around 10 weeks.

All your specific job skills are taught in a separate training environment that is a little bit more relaxed in most cases.

For my personal experience I went to Army Infantry OSUT, which is a 14 week basic training and advanced training wrapped into one. You don't need that much advanced training to catch bullets.

Some job training can last over a year or two.
