FF1 and Tactics are also good, FF2 and Crisis Core are iffy, avoid 3. Never played Type 0.

The Super Robot Wars Z2 games are pretty phenomenal as well. If you're more into just Gundam, SD Gundam G Generation Overworld's translation patch came out last winter.
