Play the series in release order first of all (if you have access to a semi-decent PC or PS3), secondly, REmake and 0 go hand in hand, so I'd suggest playing 0 after REmake, rather than chronologically.

It's pretty much a filler game that Capcom made to throw the N64 a bone when they were making all the Resident Evil games primarily on PlayStation consoles. They made the story as inconsequential as possible so that the people who didn't own the N64 wouldn't had miss out on anything.

In some cases it is. The Guardhouse and soundtrack are definitely better, and I'd argue the Return Trip to the Mansion is better.
And before you link to the 'Mansion Basement' music, that was only used in one version of the game out of 6

0 is great, the backgrounds are among the best ever, the partner system makes things slightly interesting but moderately annoying. It felt like the most well balanced and challenging classic style RE by far.

Zero is good but the REmake is legendary.

The big problem with 0 is that it has nothing interesting going on. It has the weakest enemy cast of the classic games, the environments are pretty bland apart from the opening train area, and the plot is basically non-existent between reaching the training facility and confronting the final boss.

0 isn't terrible, it just has some poorly executed ideas and the partner system lead to some pretty weak level design. It has much less exploration than other titles. Plus it just happens to be in esteemed company which definitely hurts it.

It took me 3 attempts. There is plenty of room for error, even if you die. Just make sure you save once you complete certain milestones e.g get a big key item or reach a new save room.

Skip all the cutscenes, they add to the timer, and be fast in your menu inputs. The only way to stop the timer is to exit the game. Also, Jill's story is significantly easier than Chris', so make sure you try it with her first.
