That's only because 2 had a lot of unanswered questions, people were intrigued and confused "mysterious and ambiguous" with "good plot. They didn't have any answer behind any of that stuff when they introduced it.

Then the sequels came and they tried to explain it. Turns out it's hard to explain whatever they tried to do and they ended up just making a mess of it all and introducing new bullshit.
