Already there, it's so easy to get a job working on some shitty phone games that no one even heard of. I still get paid.

Friend's ex-girlfriend is a university dropout and she and her new boyfriend both work on no-name phone games out in Cal-ee-for-nye-aye doing concept art. They're both talented artists so it's kinda sad seeing all that talent being spent on a game that wont get played.

worst flaw in capitalism is that it punishes enthusiasm.

people love video games so much they pay a fee of lowered incomes for harder work just to work in the industry. It's like how kindergarten teachers are the lowest-paid job that requires a bachelor's degree despite the fact that it's probably one of the most important jobs for society and the reason its so badly paid is because everyone who works in early childhood education really, really wants to work in ECE.

In the aggregate it mostly works out but no system is perfect, is it?

of who? The normies?

A Brazilian guy once sent us a "love letter" in broken English thanking us for making such beautiful games and said he was the president of a group of people organizing tournaments of our title.
He then followed the message with a picture of himself, probably taken while sitting on the toilet, giving us thumbs up.

We were dying if laughter while reading it and one of my colleagues set the pictures as his desktop wallpaper with the caption "DO IT FOR HIM"

Pretty good.

Currently studying Unity, Unreal Enginge 4, C#, C++.
I plan on becoming a level designer or technical designer first, then work myself up towards a gameplay designer, then to a creative or game director role.

>Would a self-taught 3D artist be able to score a job easily?

Easily? No, but hard work is hardly something to shy away from. To get what you want you should always work hard.
But if you have a good 3D portfolio that's generally what matters.

Do note, becoming a character artist is out of the question unless you're a god or work your way up in the industry.
Focusing on props, enviroment, effects or animation will land you a job much easier.
>>
>>388209151

No

Pretty good. I'm just now waiting for a meeting to showcase my medical simulation VR experience. I do other VR stuff for the company to pay the bills so I can work on my passion piece in my spare time. Living the dream, baby.

yeah, the games industry thing was a mistake. do what you're good at, not what your hobby is. also do what you have good connections in

How? Did you even have any work to show off? Did you create projects based on the companies you applied to? Or did you just apply with your 2 year degree slapped on a piece of paper?

Employers don't really care about degrees.

It's soon going to be three years since I started working as a 3d artist full time. A couple of years of on and off part-time shit I did during uni before that.

I get very decent money by local standards, but it's kinda sad to know that my bosses make literal millions after Steam cut and taxes. And it's not like we're making particularly popular or good games either. I've only worked for small studios so far (sub 30 people), on fairly niche projects (survival crap with blocks), and studio owners managed to luck out and earn a lot of money. Kinda disheartening to know I'm only getting scraps of what they do.

I just want to save up, and start working on a game of my own at some point. Too bad I'm really bad at programming. I guess I just need to find a programmer who can't into art or ideas, but wants to make games.
>>

>>388199095
The "game industry" is a fucking meat grinder. Only doe-eyed noobs dream of getting in there to get fucking worked to death and spit out the other end years later, jaded and bitter.
>>
>>388217526
Well, I said "millions", not "a fat fuck took a billion and sold us out".
But the games I worked on so far only exist because of Minecraft, yea.

>>388217421
My main focus is on modelling, sculpting, texturing of environments and props. I have made characters before, and I know how to rig them and make basic animations, but a dedicated animator would be much better than me at this job.
>>
>>388217874
animators are worth pure gold in this industry, they're often overlooked but truly fundamental
>>
>>388218313
Tell that to my bosses. They can't be arsed to spend more money on someone who knows how to properly animate, instead they would prefer to buy stock animations or make 3d artists think of something.
And people still buy these games.

>>
>>388219748
Oh hey, I work from home on games as well.
You basically have to have friends outside of work. If you don't, then go make them. Start doing sports that require communication. Join some sort of club. Basically, get out of the house and meet people.
