Half-life reminisce thread.

>When/how'd you get your first half-life game?
>What was your fondest memory of the series?
>>
I got it on Orange Box for console and my fondest memory of the series was either going through ravenholm for the first time or playing HL1 for the first time

>going to a shop to look for something

>she spent quite a lot of money in it, as games have very high taxes over here, but even then I couldn't even play the games because my computer is absolutely shit
>it wouldn't be until 2013 when I got a slighly better computer and was graced with playing HL2 and the episodes, albeit in low settings and 480p
It still feels like yesterday

Seeing the half-life 1 intro on my dad's gateway computer is one of the most memorable moments of my childhood.

It was on a big, heavy crt sony screen and my dad turned the lights off in the computer room. That part after the teleport accident when you're in a dark abyss and see the vortigaunts lined up in front of you...holy fuck.

Got through a chunk of the game as a kid. Played with a damn flight sim joystick (don't ask). Was able to get to the tentacle, so maybe a fourth through the game. When you go up to fight the soldiers in the elevator and the rock music starts that was also amazing.
>>
After my friends were talking about CS, I decided to pirate it. And since HL was along with CS "for some reason", I decided to play it as well.

Then I downloaded PS2 version because I didn't have much games for that. Then went back on PC. Few months later tried to buy The Orange Box but it wasn't available at retail, so I got myself only HL2.
>>
2004, HL2 PC box set.
>>

Orange Box, PS3 Version.

Half-Life 2 was this series that took up most of the selection so naturally I checked it out after beating Portal and fell in love. I loved how the game was essentially uninterrupted from beginning to end. I could remember the game like it was an actual place that I visited, and I got Half-Life 1 on Steam not too long after that. This is about the point where I became a PCfag, better late than never. I wanted to see how playing fps games with a mouse and keyboard felt like, and I wanted Half Life 2 mods.

Upon multiple playthroughs I realized just how well designed the games were. This concept of "pacing" in a video game became something I admired immensely, and wished more games gave enough of a shit about. Reading about how the devs watched playtesters behind a one-way mirror to teach themselves better level design was inspiring.

orange box for xbox OG

liked it more than portal and tf2

ravenholm and the segment directly afterwards + the gunship chase in the boat are the most memorable moments for me.

it was 7/10 for me

Played CS 1.6 when I got my first PC in 2006. It was a shitty Dell and couldn't run HL2.

Didn't play the series until the Orange Box.

I felt the same way, everytime I see /v/ shitting on HL2 for some reason while holding HL1 as some immaculate FPS that aged like fine wine I lose brain cells trying to reason with that mentality

Bought Half-Life 1 on release day back in 1998. Pretty much the entire game was a memorable moment for my teenaged self, even Xen, but mostly for the wrong reasons.

Look how fucking tryhard you are, you can't even accept criticism of your actions! Your friend never said that they should just release the game unfinished just to appease the fans ala Duke Nukem Forever, as you pointed out. All your friend wanted to do was just share the article to show you that the game got cancelled, then you just start mocking him for it. On top of that, you post your conversation here so that we can, what, laugh at him with you? You're a fucking asshole.

I bet you're the type of asshole who screams and cries whenever you don't get whatever you want like a child and then turn around and poke fun of others when they don't get what they want. I hope this thread makes it back to your friend so he can what a spiteful person you are. You should really re-evaluate yourself, my man.

I remember playing HL1 on a demo disc I had when I was young. I loved every bit of it. Then I picked up the orange box around 2008 and played HL2 for the first time. The atmosphere of the game was so unexplainable at the time. It wasn't until the summer of 2009 that finished HL2E2, I even got that achievement where you have to keep a gnome with you through out the whole game and place him in a rocket ship toward the ending. Can't believe it's going to be almost 10 years since I played HL. I want to go back

Got the orange box around 2008/9. Hl2's pacing and level design. Coming from someone who grew up on halo and call of duty, it was unlike anything i had seen before, and pretty much set me off to a path of discovering better and better games as i grew older.

I'm surprised other people got introduced via the console orange box too. Valve was publicly ashamed of that port.

I got the orange box entirely for portal and tf2, so I went in with no expectations what so ever. I didn't even know it was a shooter at first, I thought it was going to be a short puzzle game like Portal. Having the game actually be long and action filled blew my mind. The game kept blowing my mind my adding a new gameplay style every chapter too.

The fact that the series fizzles out like this.. it sucks. Just been listening to triage at dawn for a while now. The melancholy is crushing me, both from the ending itself and the way the series was brought down. But I thought it was a good read. I wonder what will happen as they phase out their other unused series, such as l4d, or TF2. I hope that the final comic gives a good ending to it.
