I think people are reading into the inner politics of Valve too much. I don't think Marc particularly fell out with anyone to do this maliciously.

This post is essentially his story, as long as he didn't use any of Valves intellectual property, he has the right to do what he likes with the outline of the plot with his own characters. Perhaps he just felt it was appropriate to do something Half Life related around the anniversary of Valves founding, maybe August 25th was the day Half Life was born.

All this confirms is that Valve dropped Marc's story, and he doesn't really have a say in any future projects that Valve are up to. They did that for their own reasons. Maybe it was too difficult to make, maybe the producers weren't invested in it. Whatever it was, it just means that episode 3 is dead. The future of Half Life itself is anyone's guess.

I don't even think it was that amazing, but I miss what it represents. The various source games are a huge part of what pulled me from my consolekiddie days over onto the PC. The epitome of PC gaming; quality, modded to shit and back, great, server based multiplayer games, etc. Even Half-Life itself was a great example of proper, high production value *singleplayer* first person shooters, something we barely ever see any more.
